Power & Rebooting issues with Finless ROM

    Hi,

Myself and my colleague have both bought the X7 and installed Finless 1.5a, 1.6 and just recently 1.7. My colleague started to have the problem where his unit was powering off at random times while the unit was either in use or idle, an issue that he had on 1.5a and also on 1.6. Eventually he found the problem was solved by changing the screen resolution from 1920x1080 down to 1280x720 (trying all different refresh rates).

My unit was fine for a while, but over the last couple of weeks I started to see the same problem, even to the point where the unit would power on but then turn off within 20sec. I initially thought my unit overheated and would not turn on because of it, but I was still able to get into recovery mode and flash whatever ROM I wanted. However, regardless of whatever ROM my unit wouldn't work properly until I left it overnight, or for a number of hours.

My last ROM flash was Finless 1.7, and I have just changed my resolution down to 720p to see if I have any issues. I'm fairly confident that I won't, but if it does fail I'm going to whack on the stock firmware 007 from Minix.

My question is, has anyone else had problems like this? If so, how did your issues start and what was your fix? Surely running the unit at a lower resolution wouldn't be ideal seeing as thou it states to run at 1080p.

Sounds like a similar issue. However, I have not noticed any pattern to the crashes. It was suggested that I turn off all taskbar notifications and automatic updates from the play store. I'm going to try this tonight. I'll let you know if it works. Do you still get crashes with the nexus rom?

      No dice

I haven't yet tried the Nexus ROM. Tonight I ran my unit at 720p using Finless 1.7, but it still ended up powering itself off after a few hours. I just tried turning it on then, but the Finless screen only showed for about 20sec before turning itself off again.

Tomorrow I will install the latest stock ROM and see how it goes. After that, I'll try the Nexus ROM (whatever that is, I haven't heard of it before, but will search for it).

You can find the nexus rom here:

This rom works without issue for me.

It seems like I faced with the same issue (random power off). For the time being I have experienced it twice: the first time being running on linux and the second one - on Finless 1.7 ROM. There was 1920x1080 resolution in both cases.

what resolution and rate are you running on Nexus ROM at without mentioned issue? Have you experienced mentioned problem at 1920x1080@60Hz?

              Stock

Finless still wasn't working for me on either 1080p or 720p. I have no reverted back to stock ROM v7 running at 720p, and thus far (1 full night of use), no power off. I'm going to bump it up to 1080p after a few days and see if it happens then.

                sampling rate fix

I've just got a second shutdown while being running android. I found the following info in that post which can possible help us to fix random power off:

I think I also had set the sampling rate to 50000 for testing purposes sometime back. But yesterday (before the freezes) I had booted to CWM Recovery for backing up the system. After the reboot, I don't remember changing the rate back to 50000 (it doesn't persist).
So I've decided to try that fix. I installed AnTuTu CPU Master (Free) and in the "Advance" tab of "GPU control" menu I set 50000 as a value for "Min sample rate" parameter and then "Apply" button.

what exactly does the sampling rate do?

Didn't work in my case: just got another random shutdown with GPU "Sample rate"=50000

If your getting random power off's using my 1.7 ROM you will also see it happen on the stock 007. Nothing I did should change or cause this UNLESS Minix put in some kind of code to look for root and shutdown?
I sure hope they did not sneak in some kind of code to stop custom ROMs?
But I have to assume not since some people do not have this shutdown problem (me included).

                      Some thoughts:

Install an APP called extended settings. I twill give you access to setting Minix removed from the setting menu. What we want to get at is the SLEEP menu and make sure that is set to never. I have installed some APP that actually somehow changed this and started causing my X7 to go to sleep. I noticed that after a certain amount of time in sleep mode the X7 will power off rather than stay in sleep.
Might be something going on here with you folks having this problem.

The 007 kernel seems to have many issues. Even the stock unpacked 007 kernel.
Some are seeing this power off / reboot issue. People that are having this problem seem to get it solved using the kernel built by Molle using older sources supplied by Minix. See here:

What Minix (or Rockchip) changed in this 007 kernel we do not know because we do not have those new sources. Not sure we care to if there are problems

I would imagine that also the kernels provided by Phjanderson for Finless 1.6 will solve these problems.

Note that these older kernels don't have NFS support "out of the box" and the related kernel modules need to be installed manually.

Thank you Bob and Molle for your comments and advices!
Since a day and a half my device has been running linux without any random shutdowns. I hope not to have them. The only linux feature I am missing is hardware video acceleration. Because of it I run android but due to random shutdown I switched back to linux again. Hope that missing feature will be implemented soon.
