How to update firmware to a new version without loosing stuff?

Hello, since minix is going to release a new 008 firmware soonish I was wondering how could I prepare myself in order to update without loosing any app/settings.
At the moment I'm running Finless 1.7, once the good Finless will release a new update what is the best way to update?

As I immagine flashing a new rom means erasing everything, so I guess I should do some kind of backup.

What do you guys suggest?
How do you usually update firmwares?
Any suggested software to use?

Install Titanium backup from the Play store and back up each non-system app with their data to an external memory device.
