How to achieve a good 720p playback with MK802IV?

Hi.
I have a brand new MK802IV (old chipset - 201305).
Today I succesfully upgraded the firmare to the latest available (131111).
And still, the video playback is really not good and not smooth. It's like shuttering or inconsistent, don't know how exactly to describe but you get it.
I'm using mxplayer for the video playback. I tried with HW+ decoding and without and same result.
Obviously I also tried all the default installed video playback software and same result.
I saw all the custom ROMs here at FreakTab but it's only for the new chipsets.
Is there a way making this piece of hardware do what it supposed to do? Or even 720p videos can't be played perfectly with it? (not even talking about 1080p).

Factory sourced FW is terrible. I would wait a few more days. Neomode is poised to release a new version of his ROM for first gen mk802 iv units. You won't ever go back to factory fw again. I haven't.....

how do you determine the chipset?

If your s/n starts with 201307 or later it's the new chipset (AP6210)
If your s/n starts with 201305 or 201306 it's the old chipset (RTL8188)
