Out of the Polaroid Game.
Well, amazon put kindle fire refurbs on sale last night for $140 so I grabbed 3 of those. Took my two polaroid tablets back and got the money back. I still have the one with the busted LCD that I am gonna try and get fixed maybe. I want to say awesome work you guys are doing here and thanks for all the help with my tablets when I needed it! One other thing, there is some info that target will start clearancing kindle fires tomorrow at 30% off if anyone is interested. Here is a link to the thread on slickdeals about it.

Glad we could help you here. However, when the 701x and the Fire are compared, the 701x wins out, even if the two were the same price - which they aren't.
UIAM, the Fire has no SD slot. Once very much at all is loaded onto the Fire, you're gonna miss that slot if it isn't there.
Sure, there's a dual-core processor on the Fire, but with the same 512MB of RAM as is on the 701x, you'll also notice that the Fire's more sluggish. You see, without the extra RAM needed to support that dual-core processor, it can't be used to anywhere near its full advantage.
The screen on the Fire has somewhat more resolution, but again, without having the extra RAM needed to fully support that higher resolution, the overall responsiveness of the tablet suffers as a result. All things considered, the Fire would need AT LEAST TWICE the RAM it has available to make it a true competitor.
If I'm wrong about any of this, someone feel free to step in and correct me in the error of my ways. After all, my commenting in ignorance DOES happen from time to time.
To each his own, I suppose... I'm staying put.

I agree spec wise the polaroid is just as good. But these are for my 5 year old nephew and my 16 year old daughter. I am thinking build quality if they drop them etc. I have allready found out with my one polaroid, my nephew dropped it 2-3 feet and the screen busted. So I am looking at it from that point of view as well. No SD card don't really mean that much to them as my nephew just wants to play games and my daughter will use it to read/play games and do facebook. I think 8gb of storage is plenty enough for that.

The only tablet that stands any chance at all against a 5-year-old is MAYBE an iPad. Perhaps his transition into tbe world of tablets should be rolled back a few years. In this price range, the Velocity Cruz is fairly rugged, but painfully slow. Hope your pockets are deep, as a Fire isn't going to fare well in that environment, either.
Even 'gorilla glass' isn't going to have an easy time of it; it isn't breakproof, just breakage resistant - to a degree. NONE of these tablets, even the iPad, were ever intended for that age group.
I wish you and yours the best.

I let my 6 year old play angry birds and stuff on this tab. He is very careful with my electronics tho. I considered a kindle fire but I agree with the things stated here....the external storage is a real winner for me.

Some of the cheap tablets coming out now have the gorilla glass like a iPad/iPod.
For instance the Momo tablets, Cube, etc. Of course they are about $50 to $100 more too.
I know at least 2 people now that have dropped the Fire and broke them so it's not as tough as it looks.

Yeah, like artistlogic said. As for my Samsung i920 Omnia 2, it's fairly rugged, as smartphones go.
Nintendo DS or GameBoy for a tot? Perhaps. Tablets? DEFINITELY not.
In any case, I recommend any good case that flips open and closed, also functioning as a stand when horizontal. THEN, you MIGHT have a prayer of a chance that Junior might not break any more tablets. (Maybe the dude who made the wooden case for his 'Roid featured in the Accessories Forum might make one for you.)
Makes me think back to when my twenty-something niece left her iPad on a plane. She never DID get it back. Of course, Mr. Daddy O. Moneybags bought her a replacement...

I don't recommend trying this, but I can confirm that my sons Nintendo DSi took a fall from the second story of my apartment complex and it still works. I highly doubt this tablet would still look like a tablet after that kind of fall, let alone still work.

The screen resolution does not depend at all on the memory, the video chipset is designed to use a certain amount of memory and that memory is always available to it, whether it be dedicated or shared. Having handled both devices, the screen on the Kindle Fire is the clear winner, I'm fairly unhappy with the screen on my Polaroid, poor viewing angle being my biggest complaint. 800x480 is OK, but definitely the minimum usable resolution for a tablet.
I bought the Polaroid due to the price and am happy with what it does for the money, but if someone were to offer me my choice of the two devices for free, I'd definitely grab the Kindle Fire.
