My father bought this device a few weeks before me from the same seller. It had xbmc installed like mine but my version was customised ie had xbmchub customisation....I guessed he probably had an earlier board. Today I opened his up and he has the same board as me. His has stock firmware. We now have links to stock firmwares for this board. Would it now be pointless to backup my fathers' firmware for the scene. If not, is there a link to a tutorial and the software needed to achieve this with windows 8?

Hello, I'm a new owner of this "MK918" model.
One word to say, the Ethernet is a pure crap !
This is a USB 1.1 to Ethernet converter directly inside the motherboard.
The maximum speed is 12Mbps ( 1MBps) ... not enought for stream a 1080p movie...
root@yoshi:/tmp# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. 4-Port HUB
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0fe6:9700 Kontron (Industrial Computer Source / ICS Advent) DM9601 Fast Ethernet Adapter
I have the stock firmware, if it can help someone.
The CPU is capped @1.4Ghz so it is the RK3188T.
root@yoshi:/sys# cat ./devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
312000 504000 816000 1008000 1200000 1416000 1608000
root@yoshi:/sys# cat ./devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
1608000
root@yoshi:/sys# cat ./devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq
312000
root@yoshi:/sys# sysbench --test=cpu --cpu-max-prime=20000 --num-threads=4 run &
[1] 4652
root@yoshi:/sys# sysbench 0.4.12: multi-threaded system evaluation benchmark
Running the test with following options:
Number of threads: 4
Doing CPU performance benchmark
Threads started!
root@yoshi:/sys# cat ./devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
1416000
