Custom screen resolutions for non-HD displays

I bought an Android Mini PC specifically to use on a 19" monitor that supports a max resolution of 1280x1024. I haven't been able to figure out how to set that as the resolution instead of the default 1080p my device supports. My particular Android stick is the Dell Wyse Cloud Connect (CS1A13). Is this just a limitation of the Dell? I have managed to root the device and tried an app called Resolution Changer Pro, but that doesn't work. Do I need a custom ROM? Is there some build.prop property I can set? Any help is greatly appreciated. If someone has a device that works out of the box like this, I'd love to know what make and model I can buy to gain this functionality. The only thing I want to use it for is Remote Desktop to my home computer using Microsoft RDP.

I used the following YouTube video to root my Dell Wyse device. I have since returned the thing and built myself a Gigabyte BRIX machine instead. There were way too many apps in the Play Store that said they were incompatible with the device. Plus, I was never able to get it to run the resolution I needed. Good luck with yours!

The device shipped with a native resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p). The monitor I wanted to use it on runs at 1280x1024.

Yeah i noticed the issue with Play store, lucky there is other sites that doesn't check what kind of device I'm using
Do you mind linking to the youtube video, if you still remember it, or at least what you searched for,
it seems that i can not find anything regarding the wyse client and rooting?

Yes, I'm sorry. I meant to include the link to the YouTube video before, but apparently forgot. It isn't for the faint of heart, but it did work for me. The end of the video does provide instructions for adding an English version of Superuser. The video link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCBLOhWavT0. I hope that helps!
