It is possible to run Debian and Android alongside each other using Debian Kit or Lil' Debi (both apps available in Play Store). You need root though, but as I said earlier that is just a matter of downloading the right zip file and rebooting the TV BOX.

I've used Debian Kit and it's running openssh-server nicely already

Yes, i agree with you. As @Nut and Bolt points out i also buy these since it's kinda cheap.
And i'd also think that it might be useful for my kids, but is there an issue with video playback?
What's good with openElec vs XBMC on Android? I though Android is very convenient for all the apps, games + XBMC etc?
I know S802 has MALI 450 which is better than MALI-400 which is in RK3188.

Linux on this device would be nice for my other purposes to have a small 24/7 device to run ssh/cups etc.

I have the M8 in my lvg rm running openElec and it's pretty much flawless.

I am still looking for a way to put Linux or openElec on the Fview to see if that will make the video better but It seems there's no builds for RK3188 anywhere

I purchased this unit mainly because it was so cheap. Rooting the device is just a matter of placing Finless’ Neo X7 update.zip on an sd card and installing the update. Installing CWM from http://androtab.info/clockworkmod/rockchip/ doesn't work - it checks whether the device identifier is rk30sdk or rk3066, whereas this unit identifies itself as rk31sdk. It shouldn't be too hard to fix that.

It's a potentially very powerful unit, especially for the price. 4x 1.4GHz Cortex A9, Mali-400, 2GB RAM. All it takes is better software to unleash the potential.

Btw, do i need to root it in to get better performance, i.e higher CPU frequency as pointed out by someone here?

The problem I have is the "T" in the 3188T , they throttled back the performance so xbmc videos aren't smooth, that's why in looking for a Linux build to try

It goes into standby mode with the remote power button

i still can't get the box to run super smooth even with it rooted and over clocked so as an owner I suggest a different box. I am trying to find a Linux version for this to see if that helps
