Ethernet not officially supported on android?

I believe that ethernet is not officially supported by android,
this is because a network connection permission check only checks for wifi (or 3G),
    eg iplayer.

i also think that this causes issues with some other apps,eg netflix.

There are no big name devices that seem to support ethernet officially either,
so for the time being, I think there is no proper fix for android tv players over ethernet.

so... Everyone can stop looking or someone can prove me wrong

    See..

    For a possible solution

Please complaine to the iplayer app maker..
As his app did work fine in the past on eth0
    --
Android is phoneOS.. just like the apps made for it
And we are trying to use it as a desktopOS

Currently the 'pre-installed' kitkat version.. is not tweaked to be a desktopOS
-thats why some apps run: small or 90degrees or get upscaled badly
In time these problems will get resolved..

    Cheers

None of those work, I spent a good few hours looking through all potential solutions, hence I am saying it is a problem with android not recognising ethernet as an internet connection when doing the permission check.

The only suggestions people make is spoof wifi to trick the permissions, or edit apk to not check,
hence the issue is ethernet on android.

And it is ethernet issues that mess up netflix, which does still work, but is no where near as good quality as it is over wifi.

Android just isn't optimized as a desktop solution. Its primarily a mobile OS. If you want a good HTPC then you're better off with an Intel NUC with Windows you have to pay a lot for it though.

This should tell you your answer. If the APK itself is checking for a wifi connection!
If it has a check in it, that's the issue. Not an base Android issue.

The lack of proper os support ,basic functionality failures and poor performace with popular apps has killed my interest in an android tv box.

If I wasn't a "tweaker" these boxes would be close to useless. All the main TV apps in the UK don't work, there's basic stuff you can't do like zoom in and out of maps and Netflix has poor quality. For the average user who wants a solution out of the box its not good.

Basically all TV apps work here in Sweden and for the one I found that doesn't you can use the XOT add-on for XBMC instead.

Still, I bought it in large part because I love tinkering and all things Android.

I was looking at the s802 SOC box to use as a Windows Media Center Extender. I have found in research that Close Captioning is not supported in XBMC for Live t.v., the s802 appears to have issues with .avi files for local playback and something as basic as Netflix HD does not work on these boxes. I do not want an experimental device, I want a box that works without issue since it would be part of a t.v. ecosystem. WMC needs solid reliable networking since it is not very fault tolerant which again seems to be an issue with the S802 boxes. I hope all of you enjoy your Android t.v. boxes and have fun with them. I will check back every 6 months or so and see if any progress has been made on the issues I have listed above. Thanks again to all of the posters with a lot of enlightening information.

Netflix works as good as any other android device on wifi, just not on ethernet.

My HTPC /NAS with WMC and Extenders are on a separate Gigabit wired network to ensure faultless playback of high bit rate media on up to 5 Extenders (XBOX 360s) at the same time. Wireless will not work for my setup. The Android tv box has great potential with all these great people working hard to make them something beyond a hobby box.

it is not an app, might be worthwhile having a read. it's a Windows utility that sets the MAC address for the S802 device, so it may help with the apps which don't work on ethernet (by default there is no MAC address set).

There exist a MAC but the same at every device... this is for user who want to have different MAC...
