rk3188 vs rk3288. Is it worth it?

    Hello, all freaktabbers

So I am currently using an rk3066 based mk808b TV stick, which I kind of love an hate at the same time. I mean, I love the idea of having full on android system on my TV, but the thing is - it is kind of laggy and really unstable, e.g. I get a lot of crashes 'n' stuff. Also, XBMC struggles to play 1080p videos, let alone stream them from the web Even after flashing Finless Bobs' ROM and doing some further debloating I am not really satisfied with my TV sticks' performance.

So I've decided to get me something with more power and RAM, like Ubox r89 or CS918. The question is, are the rk3288 based devices worth the extra dollar? I won't be using the 2K/4K video output modes, but I do plan on doing some gaming, so the octa core mali graphics processor would come in quite handy. If XBMC would run smoothly enough, I'd consider using that as well, but, at least as for now, I'm pretty satisfied with MX Player.

Also, I've read that rk3288 devices (well, at least Beelink/Ubox r89) get really hot. Do they have any heatsinks? Because, judging from the photos I've seen, they do not If that's the case, I'd be more than happy to contribute and do a hardware mod to add heatsink (or a bigger heatsink) with a fan.

Also, do hdmi dongles and tv boxes based on the same chipset differ performance wise (e.g. CX919 and CS918)?

I'd be more than happy to hear some oppinions from You guys, espicially those of You, who have used both rk3188 and rk3288 based devices.

Also, if You have any advices on how to make mk808b eat up less ram and make it less unstable and laggy, I'd love to hear that too.

I can highly recommend the Bluetimes QPRO RK3288. It has broad ROM compatibility as it's literally identical to the Cloudnetgo CR12; I'm reviewing it over on this thread: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...s-RK3288-boxes

It does have a heatsink (pictures in the thread linked) and it runs stable. I never considered the RK3188 much of an upgrade at all.

The RK3288 starts up in less than 10sec, and apps like XBMC launch almost instantly. It's a world of difference from the 4.4.2 RK3066 I used as my daily driver.

Wow, that thing is fast! Well, compared to my mk808b ^^
My HP tablet with Tegra3 barely runs Asphalt 8, but this thing seems to be truly worth the money.

So how about root access and roms? Does it ship pre-rooted?

I was considering on getting the Ubox r89, but, reading Your posts on the thread You mentioned... Well, I might just change my mind. Also, the prices are about the same, at least on ****.

Rooted with Kingo, took less than two minutes. It's compatible with a broad range of ROMs, look over at the thread you'll see there's been three updates in just the time the thread's been open (about a week)

...and that's asphalt 8 running at 1080p with all the graphics maxed out.
