There are three images during boot

• the image embeded in the kernel.img, I've only changed this so far for personal use but I'm having suitable images prepared for my next releases. On the cube mini this is the 'dual peas' screen
• the initlogo.rle image in boot.img, I think this is the one you want.
• the bootanimation.zip in system.img

Will have a look later. Can boot.img be mounted /edited in the same way as system.img under Linux?

That will work unless boot.img has a kernel embedded in it. When it does you need to split out the kernel and the boot.img ram disk. Search for split_booting.pl :-)
