    Not your usual failure (?)

I'm starting to envy people who've bricked their device after flashing a new ROM - I can't get that far

I have a PMID4311 with ST's updated ICS ROM that I'm trying to upgrade using Bill Kleiman's latest batch of files. When my attempts failed using CWM 5.5.04 (KKRomKit9), I switched to the CWM 6.0.1.2 that Bill posted.

In both cases, I get this when I try to install any ICS or JB ROM:
    -- Installing /sdcard/CyanBook_v0.4.zip
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    E:Can't open /sdcard/CyanBook_v0.4.zip
    (bad)
    Installation aborted

As a test, I also tried to install the compatibility zip for the 4311 but it produced the same error.

Under CWM 5.5, if I tried to start over from the beginning, I'd get this when I reran ROM_WIPER.zip (even though it worked the first time):
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    Installing update...
    E:Can't copy META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary
    Installation aborted.

Initially, I thought I might have file/filesystem corruption so I reformated my SD card, redownloaded all files, then ran chkdsk on both source and destination volumes - nope, no errors, no difference.

So, is this operator error, or am I stuck with a vendor-supplied ROM that actually includes WinCE icons in its boot partition? Any help will be appreciated.

    Tnx,
    DoPa

    SD card maybe?

It almost sounds like your SD card is bad. Hope its not the devices flash, rare but could happen. Have you tried other cards?

On a second read, I notice you mention WinCE left overs on your device flash, giving me more concern for your device flash.

How far have you got with this?

The install errors were the result of either a bad micro-SD card reader on the tablet or some low-level software problem. Another card gave the same result, so I ended up pushing stuff to the internal card using ADB.

The WinCE icons are actually in the bootloader partition ('nanda') and not part of the Android ROM, so I can ignore them. I guess whoever developed the s/w wanted to be ready for any eventuality - it also has icons for some brand of TV set-top box.

As to how far I've gotten... the packages I was using bricked the device, so I taught myself how to build a ROM that works. I'll be releasing it once I put the finishing touches on it.
