    Youtube App capped at 720p?

    I have the MK80 with the latest Homlet ROM.

    I noticed that, when using the Youtube App, the maximum avalaible resolution is capped at 720p (it's the same btw with the stock rom and the Dovless ROM).

    Is there a way to unlock the 1080p streaming in any way? It feels weird for a TV box to have it locked like it couldn't manage that resolution.

    I see this also and assume it is because YouTube requires an approved device for 1080p. Netflix is capped at 480p and all other mainstream streaming services either don't work or have restrictions, no Dolby Digital, no 1080p, etc. These Android mini PCs are not approved devices, don't handle the necessary DRM and that must be the reason for these limitations. If others are accessing YouTube 1080p, I would like to know how.

        @Chris: I understand what you're saying, but it seems to me such a retarded thing to do, requesting "approved devices" just to handle a higher resolution. It feels so applish.

        Anyone who tried a Linux build on the box managed to access the 1080p setting btw? I guess yes, but I'd like to hear a confirmation.

          Tomorrow I'll try the app after installing the Fake Wifi connection module for Xposed, since I use the ethernet connection and not the wifi maybe it's a problem linked to that (but I wouldn't count on it).

          Or maybe the problem is with the DASH format of the 1080p videos on youtube, is there any way to know if the rom is DASH capable?

            It's firmware related, no app will let you use 1080p Youtube.
            Is it still easy as editing the ro.build.version.release in the build.prop to 4.4.2 or something more "advanced"?

              Youtube 1080p

              I have a older 1080p YouTube.apk that I'm using and it works great especially the 60fps content. Theres just some lines in the screen which is a problem with other apps like Netflix,etc. You click the settings gear while a video is playing a select the resolution you want(1080p). I'll post it later this evening. Just make sure you uncheck the automatic update option in the play store when looking at the youtube app under my apps or you can just search for it in the play store. If you update the app you'll lose the 1080p option.

                  YouTube 1080p APK

                  I was not able to upload the apk for some reason but here's a link to download it. Im running Homlet V1 by the way. Hope it helps!

                  *Edit:

                  This apk isn't working for some reason anymore so I deleted the dropbox link. Im on the new release from tronsmart which is based onto the homlet v2 and this version of YouTube isn't allowing the 1080p option as of now. Sry.

                    I tried this .apk, couldn't install for some reason (it gives me a generic "didn't install" error).

                    I tried the same versione number .apk from a mirror, it did install but no 1080p still.

                    Maybe it's because I'm running the Homlet V2? What are the differences between V1 and V2?

                      Not sure but maybe uninstall the previous version or any other versions of YouTube before you install this one? Also make sure you don't have any kind of screen adjuster apps on.

                        Deleted data and cache + uninstall using ROM toolbox + reboot before trying to install your linked apk.

                        I think I'm going to give up about the 1080p on youtube app.

                          Here´s your fix

                          this is an easy fix but please be aware that it may cause unwanted side effects!
                          you don´t need a modified apk at all.

                          added: in order to make it work, the navigationbar at the bottom of the screen has to be disabled. if you leave out the qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 or if you set it to 0, no 1080p option will be available. not sure why this is.
                          so if you don´t want to loose the navbar, then no 1080p youtube for you, sorry. if you need a navbar, maybe you find a replacement for the built in one. i don´t like/don´t need it and disabled it anyway.

                          IMPORTANT: if you set the wrong permissions for build.prop, you will get a bootloop!
                          make sure it is set to:
                          0:root (owner and group), 644
                          before rebooting your device!

                          1.backup your original build.prop (located in /system) in case you need to restore
                          2.search for the following lines:
                          Code:
                          ro.product.model=Draco AW80
                          ro.product.brand=Tronsmart
                          ro.product.name=jaws_tvd_p1
                          ro.product.device=jaws-tvd-p1
                          ro.product.board=exdroid
                          ro.product.manufacturer=Allwinner
                          and change it to:
                          Code:
                          ro.product.model=Nexus 10
                          ro.product.brand=google
                          ro.product.name=mantaray
                          ro.product.device=manta
                          ro.product.board=manta
                          ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
                          3.you have to add this line also or it will not work: qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 (add it above the line"# begin fota properties" for example)
                          4.(for Rikomagic fw only)remove ro.hwc.sysrsl=5 and set persist.sys.disp_density=240
                          5.save build.prop
                          6.(maybe optional)go to android settings>apps>youtube and clear data.
                          7.reboot. done!

                          this should work on every rom.
                          tested on Draco AW80 20150318 and MK80-20150320 firmware

                            If boxx's method doesn't work you can try installing that apk as a system app. I don't remember if I did but I do know that I got that particular apk from a xda forum about galaxy note 4 phones since they are able to play YouTube in 4k. Hope you get it working.
