Issue is it's not rooted and I wanted root access to unmount system and ftp some files over. What kitchen will work on 5.1.x ?

That's too bad... Are you 100% sure it's not rooted? In the past, I've had M8 boxes that looked like they were not rooted but, when I installed SuperSU, it turned out to be rooted (again different box so it might not be same case for you but, worth a try). I've also had success using Kingo root app on other device (CS918) in the past, not sure how well it would work on M8. Good luck!

The new.lollipop ROMs are not prerooted. You just have to flash SuperSU in recovery. It was very easy.

when you say flash SuperSU in recovery do you mean bobs 89_root_update.zip because I've tried that and its still not rooted?

Is your "Developer's option" enabled ? This can be enabled by clicking 10-times or so the Build Number in "About Phone". In Developer's option, enable USB debugging. Then, flash "89_root_update.zip" file and check.

although the root checker is now saying its rooted now which is great thanks for the usb debugging bit, I can still not use apps that require root like the reboot app ssh/sftp etc
I still don't get root access because there is non binary installed?
if I open the su app I get the following message
"there is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it, this is a problem. if you upgrade to android 4.3 you need to manually reroot consult the relevant forums for you device"
I updated the su in play store but get the same message now but says 5.0 not 4.3

Flash one more time and may be, this time it will flash correctly. If this does not work, try to manually install SuperSu and BusyBox from playstore.

sorry I supplied the wrong information before, it does not say its rooted in root checked app, I had not run it, I thought it said verified but it actually says verify root (my bad) tried installing busy box that just says there was a problem opening shell with root access.

What image do you use on the m8s+ running lollipop 5.1?
I have tried the archive from chinagadgetsreviews, after installing this i am stuck in the amlogic logo.
When i flash from android system recovery i get a warning about /misc that can not be mounted.
Can anyone send a link with a working update please ?

                            Thx

                              did you sort this?
are you flashing a +Plus box because it wont work on M8S unless you edit the firmware?
and 5.1.1 I found a real pain to try and edit
after hour of reading on xda and playing I was still not able to build it back up correctly.
