(i previously made a topic like this in another category, i already closed that topic, i probably can't delete it, sorry)
I would like to install a recovery like TWRP or CWM into my device (for backup etc) and maybe a new rom
I saw that there are tons of clones of this TV box...
I don't know if mine is fake or not, using different apps and looking into build.prop...
This is what I found out:
MBX, M8S, n200c, KOT49H
Amlogic S812
Sdk 19
Android 4.4.2
The motherboard says M9&M8_8bit_V1.1
The Wifi Chip is a MURATA XJ-A KM3201 (confirmed by the MAC address)
the RAM is a Nanya
Ethernet Pulse H1102NL (100 Base-T)
I found several information on the drivers that my M8S is running, but i managed to understand only a little about them:
My wifi chip is running with a BCM driver, apparently: bcmsdh_sdmmc
the ethernet runs with an Amlogic driver: meson_eth
the Amlogic drivers appear to be also on other components:
the sound card with aml_snd_m8
the serial peripheral interface: amlogic_spi_nor (does this mean that my ROM is NOR based?) bt-dev i think this is the Bluetooth driver (since i found it under RFKILL with another reference to the bcmsdh_sdmmc
then a series of other aml drivers for the remote, the other I/O devices etc...
in all of this mess can i guess the ROM and RAM type and the BCM model? a way to safely install a recovery etc... i really don't know what to do... Help!
As i told you i have the exact same box ,and with the firmware it came preinstalled (n200C-ota-20151110.zip ,the links below) i experience random halts that forcing me to power it off and on again
the problem is that i cant find any working firmware or at least a compatible one ,only the default works when it inst freezing
Does yours works normally?
If you find any working firmware please let me know
I installed openelec and although it only recognizes 1gb of ram everything runs smoothly and with no freezes or halts ,so no hardware issue ,just shitty android implementations by some chinese crap manufacturers
I may say something stupid, but your problem may be with 1 or 2 ram chips.
they might be damaged.
Anyway, i'm in contact with the producer of this exact device, i'm asking for the stock firmware they used and, eventually (and they seems to agree) for a firmware upgrade, if this is true we may have 5.1 soon enough.
EDIT: anyway, the specs of our device appears to be the exact same one of the Acemax ap6330, the Murata wifi chip in ours is a compatible version of the AP6330/AP6335.
Nothing is stupid with these damn machines ,my first thought was also ram problem but openelec runs flawlessly ,maybe it doesn't access faulty ram sections as it only utilizes 1gb of ram
i will give android one more shot when you have the firmware and i will also try something like memtest86+ for android
will see ,thanks for all the help you provide pal
edit
i tried a firmware directly from acemax website but i cant remember which ,i tried a ton these days, as i see they already have a lollipop rom for m8s+ which it has gigabit ethernet
I'm still waiting for an answer from them, it shouldn't take too long, they said that they can work on a updated firmware for our devices, maybe even on a 5.1 lollipop one, if there are enough users looking for it.
Maybe you can send too an email to them asking for an updated firmware, saying which firmware you had before the brick and the exact version of your device, it should work if 2 or 3 of them ask for the firmware saying that there are several other users looking for one.
Greetings, all, from a noob. It's my fist post here at FT.
I must apologize for my tardiness (I've been a member since the 7th, and been eager to respond to this post!) but have not been unable to post until today. (redshift, Извините!)
Ironic, Fenr89, you posted within a day of me searching for answers to similar questions about the M8S, and your experience appears identical to mine. Regarding your screenshot of your boot-up splash screen of the Rockchip CPU logo: I don't recall Rockchip releasing a "M8S" CPU, but I suspect it's less of a coincidence M8S also happens to be the (alleged) model of the BOX(?)
Not being able to post here, I've been otherwise digging around and found this Youtube video of an "M8S unboxing and review" showing a bloke booting up his box into a (what I know believe to be the Real Thing) Rockchip splash screen displaying "S812".

I started as he did - clean wipe to factory default as the first step. Clean boot-up didn't change the splash image - mine still says "M8S". So I guess, "All M8S boxes are created equal" (but some are more equal than others...). Run yours under AIDA64 (Free at Play Store) and see if you get anything different than mine, namely my CPU gets identified as "AMLogic Meson8 8726-M8.
The 8726-M8 is certainly NOT an AMLogic S812. Searching Wiki, the 8726-M8 apparently LATER BECAME the M802 (not the "S" 8 "1" 2). Mine also can't find more Flash mem than 5.6ish Gb.
FYI: My three (3) M8S boxes arrived last week from "TOMTOP" in China. Given that they were each about $71 CDN(!) all-in (in my hand total cost), and that all 3 are currently running on KODI 16.0 beta just fine, I may still find eager buyers in my locale despite the boxes being "not as described" when I ordered them.
FenriX89 post their email here so that anyone with the same unit can put pressure on them
and also for your original post questions you cant install twrp because there isnt a 100% compatible one yet but you can run it once with the toothpick trick
format into fat 32 an sd card and wite u-boot.bin you send me ,the twrp you will download, and the firmware you want to install, insert sd card into the box, firstly insert toothpick into av (and hold until you see twrp curtain) ,secondly insert power cable to the box
perform a standard wipe ,choose sd card from top, select the zip file ,and then install it,sometimes you will need to modify a file inside firmware to disable some safeguards ,if you cant i will help you
BUT BE WARNED ,IF YOU FLASH AN INCOMPATIBLE ROM AND BRICK IT YOU WILL NEED USB_FLASH_TOOL AND SOME STEPS TO RESTORE ORIGINAL FIRMWARE
browse here and choose TWRP M8S N200C BY HIPISXBIT.img
At me same, s802b processor, but not s 812! I have a brick. on сд the card doesn't react, to the button in аv too, to the computer it is connected without button, but insertions имг aren't sewed, the mistake for 2%, is twr backup

Sorry that it took me so long to write an answer.
Anyway for now i just would like to take a complete rom backup of my device, can your tutorial do this?
As i told you i have the exact same box ,and with the firmware it came preinstalled (n200C-ota-20151110.zip ,the links below) i experience random halts that forcing me to power it off and on again

Toothpick recovery from SD will recover a seemingly dead 'bad flash' in most cases, including incorrect OpenELEC flash. I've tried many, many different versions and this is the only one that has worked flawlessly. OpenELEC
Tried various versions of OpenELEC, I've found that the working ones all seem to boot and go into standby absolutely fine until the power cable is removed. After reinserting the power cable, they will fail to boot. Blank screen, no LED. No recovery menu.
Bizarrely enough, if I reinsert the SD card that had the OpenELEC installer on, they WILL boot, each and every time.
It seems the bootloader isn't compatible with these boards. If you have the black screen issue with this exact model, give it a try. I had no issues with WiFi or the remote control. Bluetooth was none-functional and the boot issue requires the SD card to be left inserted. Available memory displayed as 1535MB.
