Ok, Happy New Year!!
Kids are back at school and now I'll have time to try the firmware update.

What is the easiest way to do the flashing that doesn't involve the need to have three hands.

Have a look here. It is for a different RK3229 box, but the procedure should work for you.
Disregard the part that defines the USB OTG port, I do not know which port on the MX9 is its OTG port. Hopefully it is labeled. Also don't use firmwares posted there.

Unfortunately though it did not solve my issue with Kodi which once installed did the same sub menu disappearing act as described here.. http://www.noobsandnerds.com/support....php?tid=17314
Seems I will need to find a firmware that does not run the Box Installation Set Up when rebooting.
Um.

Just to let people know, the USB socket to use is the one at the back and the reset button is in the AV socket.

Ok, I downloaded the basic FW with 4.4.04 Kitkat from that same link on China Gadget Reviews.
So far so good as far as kodi goes.Jarvis 16.1 running now. Test will be if it is still running tomorrow.

Well, I think I can safely say that this issue is now resolved.
In fact, the box is running very sweetly.
I am delighted.

It says that it can 4k resolution but I get HD 720p maximum. Did anyone check?

Not checked, but I would think that the 4K streams etc are few and far between. I can get plenty of 1080Hd streams.
You could test by putting a 4K vid on a usb stick and playing it via the box.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of 4K. I like my images more realistic,
