Perhaps, if you are of a mind to try, you could load up a few different firmwares based upon your suspicions of what it might actually be and see if one does the trick.
I'm going to try a few 5.1 versions us8ng that specific uboot.

I've managed to get android recovery installed also so im basically back to a 4.4.2 working matching.

I'm currently just trying to install twrp to take a full backup so I have one when I further experiment.

Another forward step is I've managed to get twrp to load.
I had to use the MXQ III twrp version.

So again all this seems to point to this box actually being a MXQ III

Even though everything states it's a m8s from the box to cpu-z
Either that or it's a complete miss mash.

Once I've backed up in going to see if I can grab a MXQ firmware file and see if it loads.

If I can get this onto to 5.1 I'll be quite a happy bunny.

It's not actually relevant now as I replaced the box with a new h96 pro+ clone but once I get the bit between my teeth I can't stop

Sorry the above should say mx III twrp worked so looks like it could be a mx III clone inside an m8s box

I'll be keen to see if you can get it fully working across the board.
