rather ODD development - I installed "z4root" as recommended in another post. The app of course does a root check first, and according to z4root my PMID701c is already rooted.... which I did not do myself...
It is not a returned item as I watched it come off the pallet at BigLots.
Also since I got the market working by installing the signed Google Apps manually prior to this, I was able to download SuperUser from there, install it, and I now have working superuser perms and can run apps that require root. Not sure if this will be the case for everyone, but this device came already rooted...
Realize though that your are not "fully rooted" as you cannot write to /system. What you have is what we call a simi-root.

I was having the same error when attempting to transfer the file via USB, and also via FTP. I was finally able to get it to install correctly by downloading it directly on my tablet through the browser, and using bit.ly to save the trouble of having to type in the long URLs. Try this one (from XDA Developers forum) http://bit.ly/hOAoml
same here with sealed box and pre-rooted (or at least simi)
I saw my pmid701c get pulled from a brown box I watched get cut open. My unit was sealed top and bottom. It was/is pre ROOTED (to some extent anyway, I read Bobs comment about simi-root above).
Your not alone and I am glad to read your post myself!
Thanks for all of your replies (and above user confirming partial root). I tested what Finless said and he is 100% correct, the only thing I cannot do is write to system/...
I also have gotten Z4root saying "your device is already rooted" WOOT!
NOW has anyone tried their "Re-root" option?
I was brave enough to attempt it just now, and it actually didnt do anything. It stayed on the process for a long time, nothing happened after about 10 mins, so i eventually force closed it and rebooted and nothing came of it
Now if I had a ROM dump I could make /system RW. But if this is not a RK chip (another posts suggests it is a All Winner) then it would be new learning for me as I bet the ROM is not in the same format.

Yes this is an All Winner A10 processor not the A8 stated on the box.
I posted the pics here and on another thread. I also reported I recently bricked after hitting "Un-root" in Z4root.
Which I just exchanged for a fresh one.
If this is not a RK chip then the proceedure to dump the ROM we have document using rkdump will not work for this and I do not know how to do it for this architecture
I do not know if there even is a dump tool for it? YOu guys might have a look over on XDA and see what All Winner tools they have.
I need to learn other ROM setups eventually myself.

I actually started on XDA's forum and everything about polaroid was for the p700. Which led me here and to the 4.3 version which in the end used a completely different processor
I will say now that we know what the correct processor is that we are dealing with maybe we can truley progress and possibly go Honeycomb or ICS!
I am truly going to warn you guys about ICS. Morka found this as well doing his port to the Arnova 9 G2.
1ghz doesnt seem to cut it. Sure it works but if you like a laggy screen and slower app load times, etc. Thats what you will get. He found 1.2 is pretty much the minimum requirement when it comes to ICS. I know.2 doesnt seem like much but it is. Most the tabs now that are coming out with ICS are not only 1.2 but many are dual Proc too.
