On Sunday, I bought the Lantic L003 Android mini TV PC which is about the only RK3188 device of its kind available in Taiwan. Website: http://www.lantic.com.tw/product_inf...products_id=86 As you can see, it's a typical 3188 device with two USB (1 is OTG) ports, power connector and micro SD slot. It has a recessed recovery / flashing button on the side which is interesting because if you 1) Push the button while connecting OTG to PC, it will be in a ready-to-flash mode (with RK flash tool in Windows with driver) or 2) Push the button while connecting power, it will boot into recovery mode with a typical Android recovery menu.
UNFORTUNATELY, the device is not rooted and has a dumbed down version of Android 4.2. How bad is it? Well, when I try to follow rooting instructions, there's no way to set USB debugging because there isn't a Developers Options sub-menu! See pics: http://www.filedropper.com/screeners
So how to root this device? Also, perhaps another device's firmware would work OK for this one since it seems so generic and can easily be put into flash mode. Which? According to the site it has Broadcom wifi and Bluetooth 4.0. Should I find out exactly which chips are inside? How?
Btw, I've flashed devices a few times, but I've actually never rooted anything yet. That said, I have read a bit about it and think I could manage it.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be kind enough to offer

Edit: Although I think it unlikely members here will ever buy this device, perhaps it's appropriate to say a tad about it:
Pros:
- It can read and write to NTFS partitioned USB flash drives.
- Wifi range is excellent
- Bluetooth has excellent range & I'm able to use a mouse, keyboard and speaker simultaneously without disconnections, lag or miscellaneous problems
- It plays 1080p videos stably and doesn't get too hot doing it
Cons:
- Not rooted
- Has a dumbed-down version of 4.2 which seems made for discouraging rooting
- Not a lot of pre-installed apps
Edit: To root, install ADB drivers (which was what was holding me back) from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/xg...ers%282%29.zip
Follow instructions from here: http://www.cnx-software.com/2013/03/...3188-mini-pcs/
