    PMID701i WiFi Drops After Sleeping

How many others are having problems with their PMID701i loosing its WiFi connection when it emerges from sleep? I noticed on another thread that a couple of people reported this problem. Both of the ones I bought two days ago are doing it. One started doing it almost immediately, and the other was fine, it seemed, for a day or so, but now they both do it. Actually, the first one that had the problem I took back and replaced it, and this is the replacement doing it now. When it happens, system settings will show that the WiFi signal is not in range, even when standing next to the router. If you try to turn off WiFi and turn it back on, it will get hung trying to turn off and display the message "Turning off Wi-Fi..." for ever. Only recourse is to turn the whole tablet completely off and restart it. Debating whether to take them back for 701c models that our local Big Lots has in stock - they have no more 701is, or does anyone have hope that there might be an update that may fix this problem. BTW, I think the only way to beat this is to put it into airplane mode before you let it go into a deep sleep, and then take it out of airplane mode when it wakes up. Anyone have a fix?

As near as I can tell they all do it, even all 3 of my c's. The only way short of waiting awhile for now is to go into settings. I uually find I can even go into the wifi settings where it shows the available networks and it will connect without having to turn off/on. As for now it looks to me like an issue with these at a driver level and will likely not get fixed untill we start getting the custom rom's together.

Are you guys saying that when your tablet awakes and indicates there is no connection, you can go into WiFi settings and simply tap on the WiFi network you were connected to and it will remake that connection? When I go to WiFi setings in those conditions, my former link is listed as "out of range" and if I tap on it, the only options I am given is to "forget" or "cancel." "Cancel" just eliminates that dialogue, and "Forget" will literally forget that connection and it will disappear from my list of connections. I haven't figured any way around this once it has dropped that connection and it shows up as "out of range." Now, mine is an i model and are you both talking about c models? Perhaps there is a small difference there. Sabercatpuck, do you simply go to the WiFi settings and let it sit there and it reconnects? If so how long? I will be testing mine today on diferent networks to see if there is anything up with that. I'd love to see custom ROM that fixes this, or maybe even an update from ST.

WiFi fix is in the works

Just got off the phone with Tech Support. After describing the problem and discussing it for a bit he told me to hang on while he checked with someone else. When he got back on he told me that the manufacturer is working on a firmware update, and they are aware of this problem. He told me they expected it in a week or two and to check their site for it. We'll see! I've still got more than 3 weeks to return it for refund at Big Lots. So far that is the only issue I have with this Tablet.

BTW I tried the Android utility WiFi Fixer. It detected the WiFi shutdown and tried to turn it back on, but it can't do it and hangs with the message "turning Wi-Fi on..."

Here's my solution for the wi-fi sleep problem...

Download and install "Auto Airplane Mode" by DON from the Google Play Store. Launch and untick everything except "Start on boot"

            Optional:
Downloaad and install "Spare Parts Plus! (no ads)" from the Google Play Store. Launch to review and/or set the "Wi-fi sleep policy"

            It works for me

I can also say that auto airplane mode works.. It keeps the wifi from ever sleeping, and therefore the bug never gets to happen.... It just turns the wifi off automatically when the screen goes off. A side effect is better battery life as well, and so it's a win win.

Auto Airplane Mode Works - Thanks

Thanks for the tip. Auto Airplane Mode seems to have cured the problem, and yes, it does improve battery use because of the low power consumption while in sleep. It can literally retain a charge for days when the radio is off in airplane mode. I had adopted this work-around on my own, but I was doing it manaully, which is not ideal. Now I feel I have one sweet tablet for my main goal of having a convient reader and movie viewer when I take Amtrak cross country this summer.

A L'il Automatic Airplane Mode Gotcha...

Automatic Airplane Mode does "fix" the WiFi sleep problem, but today I discovered a little problem with using it. I like to use Tune in Radio which streams radio from the internet. Now, after I installed Auto Airplane Mode, Tune In would go dead a couple of minutes after the screen went dark as if in sleep mode. Tune In does prevent the system from actually falling into sleep mode when it is streaming, but it doesn't stop Auto Airplane from turning off the WiFi radio. After a couple of "lost Stream" error messages I realized what was happening and turned Auto Airplane off. Tune In worked fine, but you do have to remember to turn it back on after you quit Tune In.

This could cause problems with other programs that allow the screen to turn off but keep the tablet awake doing streaming in the background. Just a warning to others who are using this fix for the WiFi problem.

                    Same Problem

I got my PMID701i about a week ago. I am having the same issue when mine goes to sleep and can't get wifi to come back on. I installed the auto airplane app and it work for about 5 minutes of sleep, but then it doesn't... the wifi with turn it. The only way to bring wifi back is to reboot.

I installed a terminal emulator and tried turning wifi back on through the command line and it doesn't do anything... it doesn't error either telling me it does recognized the commands either. I either it with super user and regular user.

I really want this to get fixed. I don't think a patch has been released yet. Has anyone figured a better solution for the wifi problem?

Return it, get a PMID702c. Not being flippant, but the wireless problem with the 701i is pretty well known, and the big lots in the SoCal area were swimming with the newer model, last I checked. Call them ahead of time and make sure what model they have in stock; the new packaging lets them see the # easily.

Install Spare Parts+ and use it to make sure Wi-Fi Sleep Policy is set to "When screen turns off". That's the way my 701i is and come back on reliably after the tablet wakes up.

I did install spare parts and it is now working correctly... thanks. I didn't install it before because I figured it was optional.

Other than the wifi issue, the tablet is fine. I can't return it easy... I didn't buy it at biglot. When I went to biglot to grab one, they were sold out, so I ordered mine online.

I installed market and removed bloatware and the tablet is running great. I don't need a webcam or I would have went and maybe picked up the new one they(biglots) are selling with the webcam.

I really want to see some custom roms come out though. But right now, I am happy with it.

I have a SNES and Sega Genesis emulators installed with the games and it plays them great.

I also installed GO Launcher for tablets as the home replacement. It is wonderful... very fast.

Anyone know of a good free handwriting recognition app? I want to use my tablet here at work for note taking. Want it to be able to convert what I write to actual text. I see they have some that cost, but I would like to find one that is free.

                          THanks

If you don't already have it, grab the Droid TV Primetime app. It's like a DVR for your tablet. They have an impressive list of shows that download to your SD card so you can watch them anywhere without a wifi connection. Great for those train trips! I'm currently using it to get caught up on "The Walking Dead" and "Mad Men."
