Response from Tech Support on this issue

I wrote tech support on this issue and they replied back.

They said flashing the firmware update will fix this issue.

Figured I would share this with everyone...

Here is the exact email cut and pasted:

Thank you for contacting Polaroid about the issue you are having accessing your new tablet. I
understand your frustration and we do have a solution for you. To resolve this issue you will need to do a firmware update. Included below are the steps on how to do this below.
Please note: All content will be deleted. You can re-download your purchased and/or free apps from the Amazon Appstore once the firmware update is completed.
Step 1: Download the firmware file.
**This step must be performed on a computer. Trying to download this file on your tablet will result in
an unsuccessful firmware download as the file can not be unzipped on our Polaroid tablets.
You can download the firmware here: https://www.southerntelecom.com/pola...pport/firmware
    1. Find your model number located on the back of the tablet.
    2. Select your model number on the support page, the download process will begin.
    3. Then select Save, and save it your computer.
    4. Once the file has finished downloading, you must unzip the file.
**You will need to have a zip program such as 7-Zip, WinZip or WinRAR to unzip the files. If you do not
already have a zip program, then Download 7-zip here.
Step 2: Install the firmware file.
    1. Hold the Power button down to power off the tablet.
    2. In the Power Off dialog box, press OK to confirm.
    3. Connect the tablet to your computer with the supplied USB cord.
    4. The tablet's USB Connected screen will appear. Select Turn on USB storage, then select OK (If you do
not see the Turn on USB storage message on the tablet screen, then unplug and reconnect the tablet to
    your computer).
    5. Find the firmware file you downloaded from our support site. "Click and drag" or "Copy and paste"
the Firmware file onto your tablet. Be sure not to place this file in any folders.
    6. Now select Turn off USB Storage on the tablet's screen, then unplug the tablet from the computer
(step one says the Firmware version should be higher than the tablet's current version. Actually, it
must be higher or equal to).
    7. You will now be directed to the firmware update dialog screen (be sure to carefully read the on-
    screen instructions before you proceed)
    8. Make sure you have the tablet plugged in to a wall receptacle using the included AC adaptor (if the
tablet powers off by accident during the install process, the tablet and the information can be
    corrupted).
    9. Press Install to begin the firmware update.
    10. You will receive a brief message that your device will reboot. At this point your tablet will go
into Recovery Mode. It is recommended that you do not move or unplug the device until the update
    process is completed.
    11. When complete, you may be prompted to calibrate the screen. This means the update was successful
and your tablet is now running the latest firmware version.
    12. You can check the version you are currently running by doing the following: Open Settings on the
tablet, then select About Device and read the number under Firmware version.
    13. Your tablet is now set to factory default settings. All settings such as date and time, wifi
settings and more will have to be reset.
You will now be able to access your tablet with out the password/pattern that was set. We hope this
resolves you’re concerns, if you have any further questions please contact us back. Thank you for
purchasing Polaroid. We truly appreciate your business.
    Thank you,
    Polaroid Customer Support Team

I'd like to be able to believe this but I find it hard. I'm currently running the image that was available on 5/4/2012. It has the wi-fi problem. I just downloaded the file that is currently available. The image in the new file has the same date (3/14/2012), time (8:04
am) and file size (261,734,400 bytes) as the May file. I even did a FC (file compare) of the 2 files and the result was "no differences encountered".

      My build number is neclear_707h9-eng 4.0.3 IML74K 20120314 test-keys

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone trying this.

Thanks kc9hi for letting us know. I will download the latest firmware, just like they say, and try it out. If it doesn't work, I will notify Southern Telecom and post results here. From what I can tell, I am not having any issues with the tablet other than the wifi sleep issue.

I went through the update back in May, and it made no difference to the wifi problem. Auto airplane Mode takes care of the problem 95+% of the time. When it doesn't seem to get it turned on, I have sometimes been able to turn it on manually. Only on a few occasions did I have to reboot. You just have to give Auto Airplane Mode a little time to turn the WiFi on - it isn't right there the instant the tablet wakes up. Then, I just tell myself, "You only spent $79 for this, so quit complaining!" LOL

It was the best $79 though I have spent. Other than the WIFI issue, I haven't had any problems with my tablet. It works good.

I applied the firmware yesterday and there is no change to the wifi issue. I even contacted customer service and they claimed this would fix the wifi issue, but it had no effect.

I am hoping someone is able to release a cooked ROM for the 701i and it will be fixed.

Download and install "Auto Airplane Mode" by DON from the Google Play Store. Launch and untick everything except "Start on boot"

                Optional:
Downloaad and install "Spare Parts Plus! (no ads)" from the Google Play Store. Launch to review and/or set the "Wi-fi sleep policy"

                It works for me

thanks, I installed auto airplane mode and spare parts plus, it works great! I love this tablet, but that was a major issue.

+1 on the auto airplane mode. Keeps this little tablet usable.

ST support were useless. 3 weeks to reply, and then they sent a tutorial on how to connect to a wifi hotspot.
