You could try an older ROM version in case the kernel in the ROM you flashed is incompatible, but I believe they all use the same kernel as the SD recovery which you are able to boot.

It sounds to me like something in your hardware died...

Yeah... I kind of suspect your NAND memory is failing... I've got one tablet with bad blocks in the data partition... sometimes it fails to mount properly until I wipe it and reinstall and reconfigure everything.

If you've got bad NAND blocks in your boot and/or recovery partitions, that could explain why it suddenly failed and now flashes ok, but won't boot unless you boot from SD.
