I am not sure I can answer you. In the Android ROM the kernel is nothing more than a BIN file. Then it gets turned into a IMG by rkcrc.

Again I am STUPID to what a kernel is other than a BIN file that is used by the device and really is a large OS file like a "BIOS" for a PC.

    Sorry I cant help more.

Its quite all right Is there a way to mount the boot.img and kernel.img that works. And can they be edited this way? I believe I have identified the kernel in the image file but I cant figure out how to edit it in a non destructive way and replace the kernel.

Again see my link I posted earlier. I explain how to take apart boot.img and how to mount system.img.

All easily doable you just need to know how to take the IMGs apart.

If I am correct and the kernel is a raw image and the boot.img file is really just a ramdisk left over from splitting then My first attempt at boot failed which doesn't surprise me given the complexity of the kernel. i have restored the Nextbook and will try again.
