    Stock 4.0 ROM...Anyone?

By chance did you back up your 4.0 ROM? I over wrote mine with the 7P update.img file. Still looking for a stock 9P 4.0 image if anyone has one.

    Thanks,
    Dan

      Lost......

Hello, let me just start by saying i have worked on many android phones; rooting, installing roms, etc. But this is my first tablet and this piece has me stumped. I got it two days ago, i knew it wasn't going to be the best tablet, but i didn't expect to be sold a steaming piece of crap. Any way, my next9p has ICS 4.0.3 installed, which is the rom that it came with, and it isn't even stable. Often force closes, and the browser randomly chooses to close without displaying any type of error message. So i decided to look for roms, ways to root, etc., and found these postings. I downloaded Bob's rom, but have yet to be able to even install the drivers in order to get the RKAndroid tool working. The tablets normal drivers are already installed in order for normal communication to happen between it and my machine, so i was not able to just plug it in and press the reset button in order to make it fail to install the drivers. So i uninstalled the two drivers i found for it in the device manager, named M908HC USB Device (both installed drivers were called this) and then unplugged the tablet from the computer, restarted the computer, opened device manger, and then plugged the tablet back in. and as soon as it started to install drivers, i immediately pressed the reset button, but the install just continues, and then completes..... So i'm not sure where to go from there. But i was also wondering, ive never dumped a rom image before, but if some one was willing to give me somewhat detialed steps on how to do so, i would gladly restore the tablet, dump the ICS stock rom, and upload for mod.

Thanks for any help in advanced.

        SUCCESS!!!!!

ROOTED ICS!!!!!!!! So, a very long process involving deletion of drivers, causing startup issues on one my machines (thank god for cmd), and many universal rooting apps. The winner ended up being Bin4ry, using the normal option in the script, and in the device go to settings, storage, menu, usb connection (before running the script). But the truly hard part was getting adb drivers to install. On my win 7 system, it was always installed as a physical drive, and when i uninstalled it, it automatically reinstalled as that before i could stop it.... so i switch to my old win vista system and BOOM... it was an unrecognized device. So the next step was making the adb driver. Sound a heck of alot easier than it was.... I used the device hardware ids i got from device manager to no avail I tried them every which way possible. Then i googled the hardware ids, and got back a completely different id, yet to my amaze, IT WORKED... So i stopped worked on it for a bit, and shut down my machine. When to start it back up and..... "your computer failed to start" " cannot automatically repair".... using vista disc, still got "cannot automatically repair" so messed around for a couple hours, got bootrec to rebuild and tell me what the problem was. Somehow the partmgr.sys was missing, so i used cmd to copy it from a usb back to the drivers folder and viola, back in business.

I know i went off topic up there, but it was to make a point. This unstable tablet has caused so many problems for me, i want to ALMOST through it off my rooftop. So anyway, i would like to dump the ics rom for Finless if he would like to fix the problems it has...

THE PROBLEMS I FOUND IN THE ICS ROM...

1: The Application "application name" Has Stopped Responding, error message displays two options: Wait or Ok. But the message is only displayed after the app has started responding again.

2: Any and all browsers i tried (built in, firefox, chrome, boat, etc.) randomly close, with no message displayed. i figured out this is Normally an issue with ics, and the suggested fix was to turn off java. Did not work.

3: Google play does not work ( does not come installed, have to download it and it will not open)

4: Camera colors seem somewhat dead

5: Many apps don't function correctly, such as skype for example. when using the web calling app such as skype, the only way to hear audio is through the headphone port, and same with the internet calling app NetTalk. Another app example is music. When playing music, a song may randomly stop and move on to the next one, not play at all, or play jumpy.

6: The capacitive buttons only light up when touched & when the screen is on, instead of staying on when the screen is on.

7: I'm sure there are other issues, but these were the ones i found in my few short days of use.

Finless would you like me to dump this rom?? And if so, if it has no recovery image, should i restore to factory before dumping the other images? P.S. i have two devices to test on (but prefer not to brick em of course).

        James

Is there a way to get this root to ICS?

Hi, I just rooted my tablet with this and absolutely everything is working. I had to download the older youtube app which plays it fine (although all the preview thumbs are garbled for some reason). Everything is fast and installed on my tablet in under a minute complete with reboots!

Now just wondering if there's a way to update from 2.3 to a newer android OS, perhaps 4.0.3 that this tablet came with? If I go into system update, there's no button to "Check for updates". Maybe I have this all wrong, so please correct me.

Thanks everyone for the awesome work on this! This has given me full access to this cheap tablet without wanting to chuck it through a window. Awesome!

Got google play store working on nextbook 9 ics rom...

Not sure anyone is following what im doing anymore but, i have google play store working on the ics rom... going to continue to fix this rom the best i can.. Wish finless would get on so i could ask him for some help... having a hard time figuring out what the offset values are for the stock ics rom i dumped.... but any way, doing as much work as i can... not much spare time anymore so not so much sleep... Anyway, going to keep posting my updates here if anyone is watching...

I'm watching. I just picked up one of these units at Big Lots and was less than happy with it's capabilities. I really appreciate the work you fine folks are doing on this unit.

I did the downgrade to 2.3 with the 1.5a rom, and everything worked, but I am running into the same problems with incompatible apps, etc. I also don't see much of a speed advantage for some reason. It seems like the browser page scrolling and multi-touch zoom is much choppier than it was with the stock ics rom. I may be wrong, but it looks like the 2D gpu acceleration is no longer being used, and no way to force it's use in the new rom, like there was in the original.

If this isn't a common experience with other users, I'd like to know. Maybe I did something wrong. But I am definitely interested in new developments for this tablet. It's very nice on the hardware side, I just wish it was smoother and the stock ics rom was unlocked. Not that I can go back to it at this point

                    But maybe soon you can

If i can figure out how to correctly calculate the offset values and/or find the parameter file, you can go back to the ICS. Like i said in a previous post, i had gotten google play working perfectly, and even app compatibility. Also going to make a few small changes that would be optional to anyone else, such as ad-hoc networking. Overall i believe the ICS is somewhat better now than the ROM Bob has created with gingerbread, but his rom is still great work. The only issue (at least i feel like it is an issue) i have not been able to fix in the ICS rom is that you cannot "fling" scroll. Very annoying to me, but bearable. Other app specific glitches are annoying though, but i found they carry over to Bob's rom as well.

So in short, if i can figure out the offsets and either compile or find a parameters file, then you can use the ICS rom again, with full google play, and full app compatibility, and also fully rooted.

Really wish i had some help to figured this last bit out...

                    James

                      Another Thank You!

I'm also watching this thread with great interest. I recently purchased a Nextbook 9P (ICS) for my wife and she was less than pleased with the tablet (she really wanted access to Google!). I am really a rookie at this stuff and have never rooted or flashed a tablet but I am learning a lot from you guys. Thank you for the good work you are doing here.

Heres how to root and get google play.

I can provide you everything you need to get google play working, but you would HAVE TO ROOT it first. I can give you in depth steps on how to do all of this.

-----You do not have to do the following 3 steps, but they are just incase you want to try to do more customization with your tablet

                        Installing SDK tools
                        1. First of all you would need download the adb tools, necessary to perform most work on android, if you do not already have them. You can download them from this link if you are using a windows computer: http://dl.google.com/android/install....3-windows.exe
                        2. Then when you are done downloading this file, go to this site for the instructions on how to install it: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/index.html
                        3. Once you have completely installed android sdk tools, you will want to install the driver for your device.
                        ------

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        START HERE

Start by installing the adb driver for the Nextbook 9:
                        1. You can do this by plugging your Nextbook 9 into your computer using the cable that came with it.
                        2. Then on the nextbook 9, you want to make sure USB Debugging is enabled. You can do this by going to settings on the nextbook 9, then to development. Then make sure there is a check mark next to USB Debugging. (Windows might complain that it was un able to install the driver software. If so, you can close the windows that popup)
                        3. Next, on your computer download the file named "Nextbook 9 driver.zip" that can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?naz9jarl3u09aus
                        4. Once the download is completed, go to your downloads folder, and unzip the folder named "Nextbook 9 drivers"
                        5. Next, go to start, then type device manager.
                        6. Then click on device manger once it shows up.
7.0 Then it can be one of two options, once device manager loads:
7.1 If there is a device listed with an yellow triangle, right click on it and then go to properties, then go to details, and in the drop down menu select hardware Ids, and check to see if it lists "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&REV_0222&MI_01" and "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&&MI_01", if not, check to see if there is another device with a yellow tringle, and check it. If none of these match then go to step 7.2:
7.2 If you do not find your device listed with a yellow trianlge, then it has been installed as a Universial serial bus controller. Click on "Universal Serial Bus Controller" to open the devices installed in that category, and scroll to "USB Composite Devices" If there is more than one, then you have to right click on each one and go to properties, then go to details, then in drop down menu, select Hardware Ids, and find the one that lists "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&REV_0222&MI_01" and "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&&MI_01" as its hardware id.
                        7. Now, once you have found your device in the device manager, you want to right click on it, and choose to "update driver software" then choose "browse my computer for driver software"
                        8. Then click on the browse button and navigate to where you unzipped the folder called "Nextbook 9 driver" (probably in your downloads folder if you did not change it), and select the unzipped folder called "Nextbook 9 driver" then press ok.
                        9. Now press next, and the driver software should install. Windows will warn you that it cannot verify the publisher of this software. Choose to "Install anyway" (I only updated the setup information, i did not create the software. I obtained this software from a post by domrad through this this website. i downloaded the software from this link: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...sing-ADB-guide )
                        10. If it does not install, start from step 1 again.

Now you need to root your Nextbook 9:
                        1. In order to root this tablet, you need to download a one step tool called "Bin4ry" yo your computer, use this link to do so: http://uploaded.net/file/h44f6vni once the page is loaded, click on the free download button, and wait for the timer to count down. then type in the capatcha, and the download should begin.
                        2. Once you have finished downloading, go to your downloads folder and unzip the folder named "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15".
                        3. Make sure your nextbook 9 is still plugged into the computer (or plug it in now), and go to the settings on the nextbook 9, then go to storage, and in the upper right corner click the menu button, then click USB Computer Connection.
                        4. Now on your computer, open the unzipped "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15" folder, and double click the file called RunMe
                        5. It will open a new window (a type of command prompt)
                        6. Now type 1 and press enter.
                        7. Now follow the instructions it will give you (such as "unlock device and press restore" or something like that, it does not get difficult, and should only take 2-5 minutes to complete. And as a warning, when it tells you to press restore on your device, all it is doing is resetting some of your settings, for example your wallpaper. It does not reset anything such as saved accounts, wifi setting, sound settings, etc. and it does not remove any applications. Also, it will reboot your device atleast twice, so do not try to do it yourself when it says "rebooting device", just wait and it will complete).
                        8. When the program is done and your nextbook 9 is fully rebooted, you can close the bin4ry window.

                        Installing Google Play:
                        1. On your Nextbook 9, open your browser, and go to:

                        2. If it asks you to save then save it. Once the download is complete, install it. This will install ES file explorer. When done installing, press done.
                        3. Now on your computer, download the file named "Play For Nextbook 9.zip" that can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?thyhl5r107coayx
                        4. Once it is done downloading, go to your downloads folder, and Unzip the folder "Play For Nextbook 9" and open the unzipped folder (keep this window open)
                        5. Now make sure your Nextbook 9 is still plugged into your computer (if not, then plug it in now), and turn on USB storage.
                        6. Now on your computer, open my computer and navigate to your nextbooks internal storage. Make a new folder, and leave the name as "new folder", or what ever you like. Open it.
                        7. Now copy everything from the unzipped "Play For Nextbook 9" folder to the "new folder" folder on your nextbook.
                        8. Now eject your nextbook from your computer. Then turn off usb storage on the nextbook.
9: FOLLOW THE NEXT STEPS CAREFULLY. Now open ES file explorer on your nextbook 9.
10: Press the menu button (or option button as some might call it), and go to settings. Then scroll down to root settings. Put a check mark next to "Root Explorer" and a window will pop up asking to deny or grant. CHOOSE GRANT. Then put a check mark next to "up to root" and "mount file system"
                        12. Now press the back button twice.
                        13. Open the folder named "sdcard" then find the "new folder" folder or what ever you had named it and open it (if you can't find it there, press the back button once, and go to the folder named "external_sd" and look there).
                        14. Now at the top off the screen there is a options bar, with options such as "favorite" "select" "search" etc. Press the "select" option.
                        15. Now tap each of the files in the "new folder" folder once, so that each one's font has turned green.
                        16. Now on the options bar press "copy"
                        17. Now press the back button three times.
                        18. Now open the folder called "system" then open the folder called "app"
                        19. Now on the options bar press "paste"
                        20. Once it has finished (should take about 10 seconds) press the home button and restart your nextbook 9. When it loads YOU WILL HAVE GOOGLE PLAY. (may take a minute for it to show up)
                        21. Open google play and setup your account.

                        FIN

Oh yeah, and one more thing: if you already have facebook, facebook messenger, or youtube installed before you follow these steps, once you have google play installed they will keep force closing and will not work. All you have to do is un install them, and reinstall them through Google Play and they will work. Simple as that.

Good Luck to all who follow my steps.

                        James

I just wanted to note something here which might help. Based on another users indication that the Nextbook Premium 9 was the same as the Digma IDX9, I started doing a lot of digging. It turns out that there is at least one other compatible unit, the GoClever R93, which seems to have even better stock firmware, and includes a fully functioning Play store, and no compatibility issues. Even Netflix fires right up with this firmware revision. I haven't figured out how to root it yet, and while it would be nice, I haven't really found the need to at this point.

The firmware I used can be found here. It is Gingerbread, but so is the 1.5a. If Finless is watching this, the image in that link might be a much better foundation for him to do his magic on.

I have also found a 4.0 firmware indicated for use with a 1 gig version of the tablet. I suspect that trying to install this on a 512mb Nextbook would result in a brick, and I'm not going to try it, but again, perhaps Finless can take a look and do his magic on this image to make it run on the 512mb hardware. It is here. However, this one is the IDX9, which I don't believe has the Play store support, so it may be moot.

Just thought I would update the thread with my thoughts after installing the R93 firmware and doing some tweaking. One of the nice things with this firmware is that it uses the full resolution of the Nextbook, so that already seems to be an improvement over the 1.5a. After installing the R93 firmware, ADW and a few apps, I can say that I am really liking this tablet. The replacement launcher made a huge difference in the user interface performance. The only thing which would make it better would be to get it rooted and rid of some of the bloat. A faster boot would be nice as well. Finless, are you there ?

                              Google play on ICS rom

if you are having trouble following my methods on how to install the adb driver on a Windows XP computer, here are some revised steps:

                              1. You can do this by plugging your Nextbook 9 into your computer using the cable that came with it.
                              2. Then on the nextbook 9, you want to make sure you USB Debugging enabled. You can do this by going to settings on the nextbook 9, then to development. Then make sure there is a check mark next to USB Debugging. (Windows might complain that it was un able to install the driver software. If so, you can close the windows that popup)
                              3. Next you want to download the file named "Nextbook 9 driver.zip" that can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?naz9jarl3u09aus
                              4. Once the download is completed, go to your downloads folder, and unzip the folder named "Nextbook 9 drivers"

(Make sure the tablet is still plugged into the computer)

                              5. Now, press start and go to control panel. Then open "Add Hardware" 6. Now press next and it will search for software.
                              now there is two options

7.1 If it finds it at this point, good. Just choose to "Install from a list or specific Location (Advanced)" and press next. Then press browse, and go to the unzipped "Nextbook 9 Driver" folder and press ok.

                              or

7.2 If it does not find it automatically, it will ask you "Have you already connected the hardware to your computer?" select "Yes, i have already connected the hardware" and press next.
7.2.1 It will then bring up a list, and you need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of it and select "Add new hardware device" then press next.
7.2.2 It will then ask you "What do you want the wizard to do?" select "Install the hardware that i maually select from a list (Advanced)" then press next.
7.2.3 Now it select "Show All Devices" and press next. Now it will bring up options to choose "Manufacturer" and "Model" ignore these and press "Have Disk" Now press "browse" and go to the unzipped "Nextbook 9 Driver" folder, double click it and select a file named "android_winusb.inf" then press "open" Now press "OK" Then press next, then press next again.
7.2.4 It will now install the driver. When it finishes it will say "The following hardware was installed: %ADB_INTERFACE% and it will also say "The software for this device is now installed, but may not work correctly. The device cannot start. (Code 10)" This is just fine do not worry.
                              7.2.5 Now press finish.
7.2.6 Now i want you to open device manager. (You can do this by pressing start, right clicking on my computer and going to properties, then go to hardware and click device manager)
7.2.7 Once device manger is open, you will see a category called "android phone" with "%ADB_INTERFACE%" listed under it with a yellow circle and an exclamation point. Right click on "%ADB_INTERFACE%" and select "scan for hardware changes" Your device should now install, and you can move on to the rooting step in my procedures.

If not try restarting your computer and then open device manager and see if there is still a yellow circle next to "%ADB_INTERFACE%"

Thanks for posting the detailed root procedure. I've tried it a couple of times, but I'm not sure it works on Gingerbread. Seems like it got all the way to the end where it says it will tell you if it worked, and hung. Is this normal? If so, maybe I didn't wait long enough and interrupted the process. I do have the drivers installed properly, etc... and now have a terminal emulation app which I don't recall being there before, and can't get rid of.

                                Any ideas?

Also, I found an interesting line from build.prop in another thread which might get things running smoother on this hardware. It's "video.accelerate.hw=1". This might be the reason the stock 4.0 rom was smoother with the scroll and zoom functions, as there was an option to enable this in the settings which is not present in any of the other roms I have tried. It's also not present in the R93 build.prop file. I plan to test this, once I get it rooted.

BTW, any progress on getting the stock ICS ROM usable for re-installation?
