    A TV Box from Freaktab.com

A SPDIF port with hardware decoding would be a great addition. If the box can support DTS HD mastering that would be a bonus and perhaps a dedicated chipset for Ethernet. I have never seen a android device with proper IO when copying large files over the network. Not sure if it's a Android support thing or the fact that no dedicated chip is installed. Okay while I'm at it ... Support for 3D ISO.

Now with all of the hardware additions I recommend maybe 2 models?

One for under 100 dollars and a premiere edition edition with all the bells and whistles.

I hate the way the consumer is treated with regards to firmware updates and functionality.

This sounds like a great configuration to me!

Actually, why not push it further when you know your customers are going to be very picky, especially with their won experience.

Put a solid 2.5' drive inside, give it a proper Wi-Fi chip, add more ram and maybe have a bigger case with expansion in mind. Such devices would make a good investment for 2-3 years of entertainment and would defend a price of 200-250 depending on the features.

This comes later. First we must see what we can get.
            First it will be a RK3188 Box's.
Right now will setup a Website with future information.

                I like the idea too

But at the moment there is so much hardware out,
what you guys think about talking with some good customer
like minix or another one with good stuff.
Maybe you can negotiate something out like oppo and cyanogenmod.

Or will some cooperation like this cut the possibilities to much?

I love the idea of a Freaktab-branded TV Box, but I think RK3188 is a bad choice. There are tons of posts here explaining how bad Rockchip's relationship with ROM developers is, and if I recall correctly RK3xxx SoCs are not that great with regards to color accuracy. If you have to start with currently available hardware, I'd say AMLogic's S802 should be the bare minimum.

My own wants for this device would be: a Cortex A15-based SoC capable of decent color reproduction, at least 2GB RAM, at least 2 USB ports (one of which should be USB3) and the best Wi-Fi antenna you could get to fit in a $160 budget. I would then pay an extra $10 to ensure a few firmware upgrades and maybe overclocked kernels.

I wouldn't pay more than $170 for this box, because any price higher than that makes a low-end NUC start to make more sense.

too much competition, i'd try s802 like other person said.

May you are right, but for the new AML Box not all is perfect.
We take the RK3188 because we have all we need to make Custom Kernel and Rom.
And we have good Hardware and not taking cheap Hardware.

You are taking one of the most significant parts of the device and already stating you will not compromise on it. What's the point of making a thread asking for your potential customers' opinions and suggestions then?

I think you miss understood Neomode.
What he meant for cheap is the RK3188 T version. He didn't sayed no to AML s802, just that first step is a solid base to offer solid support.

OK it's a bit late but some thoughts about the freakbox project......
Maybe there is a slightly different tack that could be taken as apposed in future to designing/building a completely 'new' tv box?

An obvious observation from the world of the web is that new improving hardware is being produced all the time by established and new creators, here's some examples of 'interesting hardware' being developed or already out their for customisation: -

Basic power but customised : Raspberry Pi Slice

Powerful but in need of customisation+case : Odroid XU3

Powerful and cased but software customisation required (IMHO) : CuBox-i4Pro

                              Probably the next generation/designed M8's : Zoomtak M8

Yeah, yeah, I can already here the doubters, the idea I'm trying to describe is the use of already available SBC's and the creation of something more than the SBC but an evolved 'designed' boxed device that has multiple options of use - this way you don't corner yourselves into a 'niche' market that is already crowded. Small enough to be a small set-top-box but powerfull enough to be a tv box / linux / android computer - effectively a solid state NUC.

Anyway, that would be my holy grail ...........

For those still reading this post - two hopefully helpful suggestions I would make specifically for this and other freaktab tv boxes would be: -

                              1. Improved air flow.

From past experience (using an M8) either the inclusion of a silent slow running heatsink fan and air vent holes on the top (could be creative and encircle your freakbox round top logo with round air vents) or just air vents on the top - yeah people say these sorts of things shouldn't be needed and any instability is software/firmware related - with 25yrs of IT experience this argument doesn't stack up 100% of the time IMHO

                              2. A selectable country specific PSU at order point.

i.e. US 2-pin, EU 2-pin and UK 3-pin PSU's - please don't cheapen your unit buy shipping UK buyers 2-pin PSU's with 3-pin adapters or offer to supply the units without PSU's.

From the original price point discussed here, I see from your deicated website that the price point for the inital freakbox has dropped to 77 euros or more if storage increased to 32GB - great news!

The inital freakbox looks like a really great design with the above caveats.

Can I order from this website but have a specific UK 3-pin PSU please ...................... after all if you're shipping stock from the UK it couldn't be that difficult to swap out the 2-pin PSU pictured for a UK specific 3-pin version surely?
