I'm figuring out through some trial and error...and getting brave with this tablet (I've already had to open the case a few times for some advanced surgery. It's locked up on me and I've had to disconnect the battery to reset it. I don't advise doing that because there's a screen flicker now that I've disturbed the insides.

Anyway, I've found that this technique of flashing via download only on the flash tool can leave parts of the old firmware on your device...namely, apps that I've debloated, and some other settings.

If you back up your IMEI number (see the First Time User's Guide...and also there's a thread on the subject)...then I advise doing a "wipe cache/factory reset" in recovery...either CWM or stock recovery. That will give you a pure installation of the new ROM without the odd behavior some people are reporting.

Just remember to backup your IMEI number...that's very important.

As I learn more, I will update the First Time User's Guide.
I did a "wipe cache/factory reset" without backing up my IMEI number when I flashed the ROM. You said that there was no need to back up the IMEI number.

We are kind of working through a progression in understanding the behavior of the tablet and the flash tool. These MTK devices are still very new to me, and the other developers here at Freaktab.

Based on my flash testing, whenever I originally flashed a ROM using the "download only" feature of the flash tool, it did not require you to backup your IMEI number. I found that out through testing several times. But, I was running into some conflicts with the previous firmware...namely, all of the bloatware remained in place...and parts of the old firmware conflicted with the newer files.

On Rockchip ROM's, this isn't a problem...or at least I haven't experienced a problem with retaining the IMEI number after erasing the whole NAND.

On MTK ROM's, the information is stored in NAND, and therefore is lost if you do a wipe/reset from recovery....but that is required to change the user app space partition size...or to start fresh with a clean ROM.

So, depending on what you are doing...you may need it...or you may not need it...but it's a safe practice to make a backup as soon as your device is rooted.

I'm sorry if I haven't explained that clearly enough. This is why I posted a thread the other day warning users to do this...I know my user guide is a little misleading...I will have to fix that.

One user posted success in getting their IMEI number back by doing a restore from Google Backup. If you checked this option (which I believe is checked by default whenever you enter your Google account), you might be able to restore it from that. Otherwise, I'm not sure exactly how to restore it without contacting FNF technical support.

      Again, sorry about that!!!!!!

What's the use of the IMEI number? and how would I know if my IMEI is lost?

Every cell phone or device that accesses a cellular network has it's own individual number which identifies it within the network. This number is called the IMEI number.

If you want to use the 3G capability of this tablet, you must have the IMEI number to connect to the network.

So, if you have a SIM card, and want to connect via 3G...you will need to somehow get your IMEI number back. I, personally, don't use the 3G on my device...but many people do.

Cell phones are easy...there's a sticker inside the battery compartment that lists the IMEI number...but these tablets don't come with any documentation of the IMEI number anywhere (depending on the brand). There are tools available to restore this number by entering it manually, but I've found that the MobileUncle app is much easier.

How will I know that it is lost?I can see an IMEI number in antutu but I'm not sure if it's good.I tried backing up IMEI using MobileUncle but I got message that SD card is not present.

If Antutu see's it, then it shouldn't be lost. You will only know, if you try to activate a SIM card.

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm still trying to resolve the SD card issues. I can't even do a Titanium Backup on mine. But, the backup/restore app provided seems to work.

Well I don't really use SIM but maybe in the future. How come you're able to backup IMEI and I can't?

If you go to settings/storage and look at the top, there is a setting to change the default storage location, you might be able to write to SD by changing the setting.

I've been digging around in my system for a while, and have changed so many things to try to get this to work...I'm not sure what I did to fix it. It seems like I recall it working on MobileUncle from the beginning, though.

                    funny

Flashing this ROM without later conflicts requires an approach that will erase IMEI.
Saving and restoring IMEI requires Mobiluncle.
                    MobileUncle requires rooting.
Rooting is not recommended for flashing.

                    Do I get it right?

Seems like a hassle. Should I root first or not? While appreciating your contribution it would be really great to see a fool proof guide with all details considered - and explained step by step. Thanks

I see no reason why rooting is not recommended for flashing. Each of the steps is relatively easy.

I'm working on a newer guide.

Tnx for making this rom Riley!
My Ifive mini 3GS is on its way and I plan to flash your rom when I have it!

On the imei discussion, you can also just write down your imei number (shown in mobileuncle) and re-enter it after a flash if necessary? (So write it down on a piece of paper). It is just a unique number connected to the hardware right?
If it's still shown in mobileuncle after a flash then your ok and don't have to do anything, if it's missing you just grab the piece of paper and type it back in, correct?

Yes, a newer guide would be great. Anyway, thanks for hard work.

Okay now I'm having another problem -_-.

When I tried to turn on the tablet in the morning, I had difficulty turning it on. Yesterday it wouldn't turn on when I pressed the power button. I put it on charge> it turned on (Immediately, didn't have to press the power button). Immediately I turned it off and tried turning it back on> it turned on.
Today same crap it didn't want to turn on. But this time I persevered and this time it turned on after several tries.
Apart from not turning on when it is off, it has no problem turning on when it is in sleep mode so I don't think the problem is the button.

Anyone have an idea of what might be the problem?

                            Thanks
