Rockchip is working on both but don't hold your breath.

Having the Linux part separated would allow those with the 8 gig to boot into it with the sd card so they would still have the option of android (card out) Linux (card in)

On my Firefly that is how I swing. Change sd card for Ubuntu which is running with a 125 SSD or put in my Android SD and reboot for Android and I set up the 125 SSD if storage space is needed with G-Parted.
