My wife and I went shopping for a 4K TV last month. We are both exceptionally critical of picture quality in general, and - after years of saving - money itself was not our first consideration. After doing my research, the shortlist consisted of Sony and Samsung. We went to three "big box" stores to see and compare several sets "eyes-on". The 55" curved Samsung HU8500 did indeed impress us mightily, even as we recognized that more than 80 per cent of our viewing would be 1080p programs up-scaled. Even then, picture detail and quality seemed outstanding to us as we stood close to the screen. It seemed we had found our new TV.

At the last store we visited, a peculiar thing happened. They had a proper home theater lounge to simulate living room conditions, so we settled into some plush chairs and looked at the same TV - this time from a distance of 10 or 11 feet, about the same distance we have at home. The HU8500 still looked great but - to our surprise - the TV next to it- which was not on my shortlist - looked breathtaking to both of us. "What's that one?", I asked the salesman. "it's even better". "Oh, that's the Samsung UNF8000, a late 2013 model, Sir - it only does 1080p."

We stared at both TVs for 10 - 15 minutes, tried different program sources, and we both came to the same conclusion: beyond a distance of 5ft, all the extra pixels of 4K cease to matter because they are simply not discernible. Most eyes will not see the extra information. And where the 4K TV was up-scaling 1080p material through another layer of electronic processing, the 1080p set was rendering natively. In all respects that count - saturation, contrast, color spectrum, shadow detail, backlight dimming etc etc. the "lesser" set simply looked better at a normal viewing distance.

You know which set came home with us in the end. With the money we saved, we went up to the 65" version of the UNF8000. After calibration, it remains the object of awe and admiration of all who sample it at our home. Most of them say: "Oh, you've got one of those fancy 4k TVs..."

but, there must be a first rom custom, for tested the videos in multiple formats video.

the original rom is not good for the video ( 4K or 1080P ).

Till we will have an custom ROM it would be ok to test some things to know from where we start. Let's say if the player can run an jellyfish at 60, than we will have an idea that an custom ROM will be capable of 80, or probably 100.

I'm thrilled with the device, Moulin has said it all. Masses of potential - but currently, with the factory rom, my M8 with OpenElec, my Minix x8 with beta 9-2 and my Fire TV with (whatever) all do 1080p video far better. Even at 240 dpi, there's visible micro-stutter at frequent intervals. Just try Transformers Extinction (1080p) and look at the title sequence. Or any other..

Build quality and packaging are excellent, input choices are great, internet speeds are phenomenal - so much to like but the basic reason for buying this kind of device - faultless video? We have quite a way to go.

Have been testing with this device for approx a day now and some of the stuff on this box seems like its downgraded compared to previous version smh. For one, my video quality doesnt even look as sharp as my chromecast =/ It literally looks like its reverted it to 480p or something which could just be the result of The DPI on this thing being totally off too. For instance, it looks like my screen is zoomed out at all times and all icons and text are so small they are barely readable unless im standing in front of the tv or set the font size to 'HUGE'. Its also a tablet rom so it has the status bar at the top which is REALLY unreadable since the icons are even smaller then the ones in the app drawers or on the main screen. Im gonna do a detailed video review of all of this stuff which should be up tomorrow so look out for that if you want to see what im talking about first hand.

Update: Setting density from 160 to 240 in the build prop sizing issues with icons and video quality for the most part but there still is room for improvement in panning scenes. Netflix also has trouble with controls while video is plying (e.g. If i try and fast forward the moment i navigate to the bottom bar it auto hides itself and ceases to fully display again unless i exit the video completely)

You can hide the status bar by yourself. at first they don't put the status bar, i think it is not easy to use, so i ask them to add, lol. seems, i am wrong.

i need to hear much more feedback, so i can push them to fix asap.

DTS 5.1 is not working for me and others that have reported not working..works fine on my Tronsmart S89....lose sound when selecting passthrough and SPDIF in settings..Tried it with stock player and xbmc 13.2.3 w/ pass through settings..

That sounds interesting! And hopeful. But would that result in XBMC playing with the navbar always on? Or have I misunderstood you?

It would require us to manually have to hide it by hitting the down arrows on the nav nar as opposed to when video starts it doing it on its own
