Stock T428 power supply not strong enough!

I have a T428 which came bundled with a 2A EU plug power supply. I noticed that it often reset when running Antutu. After many attempt to solve the problem, I decided to measure the supply voltage with and without load. Turns out that it dropped below 4.4v while running Antutu, no wonder it resets randomly!

I did manage to get it run stable using a 2A power supply bundled with a USB hub. Still the voltage drops to 4.83v.

I see several postings here complaining about "Chinese power supplies". While it's true that many Chinese power supplies (esp. the ones built for the Chinese market) are terrible. I also tried an original Apple 5.1v 2.1A charger, but that one too dropped to 4.4v. So even an expensive brand charger is no guarantee!

Earlier in this thread someone posted this excellent link:

On that page you can see that most power supplies do not deliver the amps they are rated for or they deliver the amps but with a big voltage drop.

From this test only these two would be suitable for a RK3188 device:
    • Ioncell 4 USB 2A Power adapter
    • Goobay 42665
You might not notice the effects of a poor power supply right away, but switching to a better one does give some great improvements. For example my T428 can now run on overclocked frequencies, also the range of my wireless keyboard/mouse improved a lot.

Geekbuying: please bundle better / stronger power supplies with your quad core sticks! You can test the voltage by yourself while running Antutu!

The ioncell power adapter looks identical to this one:

Geekbuying: can you test the lowest voltage on this power supply while connected with an RK3188 device running Antutu?

Or perhaps someone else happens to have this thing and can test it for us?

      Thanks!

its these *china quality* power adapters that are causing the issues they can't sustain there rated output for more then a few min I hooked a friends MK908 into the +5V on my computer and it went from being unable to run Antutu at stock to being able to run at 1800,1300,800GPU while staying under 70c with the STOCK heatsink
anouther issue is that the power in China is 220V @ 50Hz where as the states and EU are between 110-120 @ 60Hz SOME OF these Adapters are made to operate with a source voltage of 220 NOT 115 tho they will operate on 115 but they will run very hot and they will provide less then haf of there rated output
        current devices(rockchip sucks)
Hardkernel ODROID C1 running android kitkat
Hardkernel ODROID XU3-L Running Linux/openelec (primary media server)
rPi model B+ running nothing ... bricked

Not entirely accurate, EU is 230v 50hz. I'm located in the EU so I'm using the power supply on near China voltages and frequencies. Yet, I'm still having problems with these PSUs.

Also, as I said, I have exactly the same problem with an original Apple PSU, so it's not just "china quality" PSUs. You need to get an adapter which is tested and proven to be able to pull the load, regardless of it's origin. The above mentioned test has two possible candidates, both are made in China I guess.

I have a 2000mA PSU connected to my T428 (not the one which came with it). My device also stops occasionally (in maybe 1 case out of 5 or 6) in AnTuTu at 14% but remains responsive (i.e. I can quit the app). Otherwise, I have never experienced any hangs or uninitiated reboots/shutdowns.

For testing the o/c'd kernels, I have ordered a new PSU which should arrive next week. I have also ordered a 5,5mm-to-microUSB adapter to go with it.

2000Mah is not enough period you need a 4 or 5Amps to run these devices
as I said before just because the adapter says it can output X amount of power does not mean that it can do it for sustained periods

According to that test some adapters can deliver more power than they are rated for, even for sustained periods

If you need to buy a new PSU, 3, 4 or even 5A would probably be the best choice indeed. I recycled an old 5A power supply by changing some plugs, things seem very stable now.

Geekbuying: please bundle better adapters with your sticks!!!!!!

a few people need to be reminded of a few simple facts

fact 1. these devices have overheating issues Poorly Made HeatSinks, poor applacation of thermally conductive glue at the factory are the main causes I have seen

fact 2. the power supply shipped with these devices is substandard
in many cases they can't provide there rated output at there rated voltage

the customer should NEVER be made to 'FIX' a device that they just bought recommending people throttle there cpu's because these devices have insufficient cooling is just wrong and absurd
this would be like if you bought a newcar that it overheated at 60Mph and the manufacturer fix was to only drive the car at 50Mph
and the bottom line is that the re-seller is responsible they sold it and they should be aware of any faults with it, if they aren't aware that means it wasn't properly tested ergo they are partially responsible they days of drop shippers getting away with blaming the person that actually made the device are gone
and to anyone getting the run around don't waste your time with the re-seller take it up with paypal directly
