I finally received a USB cable Male/Male. Tried holding reset but in while plugging into OTG port, nothing, plugging in power cable w/o USB, then plugging USB into OTG, Nothing. I notice that plugging in USB cable powers up the device (Odd?). So, knowing the Chinese have labling issues, I tried holding in reset button while plugging in USB cable (No Power plug) to OTG, nothing, USB 2, nothing, USB 1, "PONG"! Win7-64bit saw the device, but allas, it pong down a few seconds later because the Driver wasn't correct, Drivers provided "Say" they're installed, so either they are NOT the correct drivers OR there is some other, unknown issue. I'll keep efing with it to see what I can get done...

      Stay tuned!

I had the same but couldn't determine what action caused the pop up. After that nothing in device manager.

Ok, so I am certain that USB1 (the one closest to the SD Card slot) is the port that would do the update AND the port that Windows 7 actually recognizes. The problem is the drivers supplied will not load for this device. I did finally get Device Manager to let me see the "Unknown Device" and click on "Update Driver", but the device disconnects before any driver can be associated to the device. I have tried several diferent drives (like you), but none of them work. I have also researched several web forums and everyone who has the device is having the same issues, drivers won't load for the device, along with the incorrect port labeled as OTG. I am looking for a post I saw that references using a "bootable" USB/SD Card to load the new firmware. I'll keep you posted...

BTW, I have requested a RMA to return this PoS to China, awaiting their reply.

No luck with the bootable media option, still needs drivers, no drivers, no worky!
          BACK TO CHINA IT GOES!!!

Now to find one that actually has some support!

Yesterday I succeed to update firmware for my CX-R8 instructions are below:

First of all you need a linux distribution, any ubuntu based distribution will work; I'm using Mint 17.2 don't waste your time with windows. You don't need to install linux, a bootable usb live distribution will be ok ( you can prepare a bootable usb using Lili )
Get the Rockchips Update Tool from HERE and extract it to the directory you want (I suggest you to extract it to the same directory with firmware update.img)

1 - OTG port doesn't work, USB-1 works connect Male(A) to Male(A) USB cable to USB port 1 beside SD card slot.
2 - Don't connect USB or power cable before press to reset button (important)
3 - Don't release reset button while you plug in Power Cable and USB cable (Both side should be connected Box-PC)
4 - Open a terminal session an run the command " ./upgrade_tool uf update.img " if you are not root command should be " sudo ./upgrade_tool uf update.img "
5 - You will see the firmware upgrade process. After successfull upgrade box will reboot, and that is it.

All instructions take about 5 minutes, after upgrade box will optimize applications it will take 2-3 minutes.

I tried Wassers rom too and I liked it much but ethernet, wifi , remote doesn't work than returned to new firmware.

New firmware works good but not rooted, not optimised, comes with Kodi 15.0 Beta, don't expect so much improvements.
Wassers kodi 15.1 apk works great,

Today I tried to upgrade on x86 windows 7 an it worked, first 3 steps are important.
of cource you have to install driver

I hope helps you to upgrade,

              Kind Regards,

                      Kind Regards,

Thanks! I booted into my xubuntu and everything went smoothly. No issues with detection or flashing except for of course the mislabeled OTG port. WinBlows was having driver issues.

The previous firmware seems to be better. The update seems to have lag throughout the UI. Also an issue with navigational sounds which I was able to fix by selecting HDMI bitstream instead of Default under the sound options.

Netflix doesn't play any videos. Works fine on my other devices and previous firmware.

                        I'm glad it helped.

We need a rooted ROM like wassers, I flashed wassers rom and then fllashed kernel image but device didn't booted.
Does anyone know how to add neecessary modules to wassers Rom?

That's what you get by using a no-name RK3368 tv box with no support.
Better to get a HPH NT-V8, Tronsmart R68, Himedia H8 or Zidoo X6 with support.

Oh thank you for that most helpful post. FYI there are others having this issue as well on other Rockchip devices including rk3288. I'm going to give this firmware a try.

The above firmware update has fixed all my issues including Netflix, Kodi, and audio.
