EDIT: I just read somewhere that stock 4.2.2 FW is rooted by PIPO? On my device, the firmware is definitely NOT rooted.
Hopefully this device won't be rare much longer because I believe it is one of the best 3188 tablets right now.

The first 4.2.2 update I received from Pipo was actually rooted already. The latest firmware I used for the 1.4 version was not rooted...so I had to do it. Chances are, new ones won't be root out of the box.

I'm finding that as development progresses on their 4.2.2 firmware, they are cleaning up their tracks a little more. Like turning off the screenshot button and leaving out a bunch of bloat.

I guess you meant the 20130509 Firmware that is rooted and 20130518 NOT rooted?
I am at work right now, eager getting home to flash the PIPO I just looked through your README.
Did I assume correctly, that default user space size of the stock firmware is 2GB as well?

Yes I believe it is 2gb on the stock. I have to change so much in the parameter file, I forgot what the stock said before I started.

          Reboot2Flash Problem

          Hey Randy,

just got home, want to flash the awesome thing, but encountered a problem right at the beginning.
When I click "Reboot2Flash" from the RKAndroidTool a popup appears a "success", but then my device just turns black and is not reognized again by the tool. Windows pops up a "previously connected usb device malfunctioned.." or something error.
Rockchip usb driver should be installed, I managed to flash the new stock FW. I guess, there is a problem with usb drivers not correctly installing.... do you habe an idea?
          Thanks!

imho, rokchip drivers should be installed from "rockusb_v3.5" folder from "RKBatchTool 1.7", but not directly to let all installation to windows - you must install them via device manager manually.
go to device manager, take a look are there any yellow triangles or android devices. go there and do a reinstallation manually. hope that you know that procedure.

            or....

you just wasn't enough patient as randy wrote in tutorial:

If you have the driver already installed...after a few seconds, the flash tool will recognize your tablet as a "Mass Storage Device". Give it a few seconds and then click the "Reboot2Flash" button at the bottom of the Flash Tool window. You should get a confirmation box that it worked "Flash Mode Success", and the notification area will change to "Found RKAndroid Loader Rock Usb"

or, symple rebooting pc do a correct recognition of device.

You need to manually install the driver that is included in the ROM kit.

I installed the driver manually, in device manager I have a "Rockusb Device" entry. When I connect the tablet, the device is recognized, no yellow triangle in device manager. Then I click "Reboot2Flash" , the device turns off, not recognized by windows again with an unknown device triangle in device manager.

Make sure you have a good USB connection. Sometimes that is a problem. Also use USB 2 not USB 3 port and don't go through a hub. It has to go directly to the pc.

it is plugged directly into my laptop, using a usb 2.0 Port. I just tried anotther Port, no success.
Hmm, there is something worng with USB drivers.

What version of Windows do you have? Windows 8 users seem to have problems. Also Win7 64 bit.

I am using Windows 8 64-bit, but I have another Desktop machine right in front of me with Win7 64-bit. I did not try it on my desktop machine, yet.

whata about cable? maybe he is problem? do you use original or some other, generic cable? in some time ago, there is some strange solution with "longer" usb cable? de facto, same cable but longer body, or, shorter plastic. sounds strange in any case...

did you pay attention for vesrion of windows and/or 32bit/64bit drivers?

sometime deinstalation of drivers give good result. try that.

I use original cable, the one with the scary long plugg
I reinstalled drivers just a few minutes ago, same result. A also selected the right version.
I will try it on my other machine, back in 5 minutes

The case for the M8Pro has a deeper USB slot. Their solution was to ship the device with a USB cable with a longer tip.

Update: I got it to recognize on Win7 64-Bit with following approach:

                                - Hence, the tablet is automatically recognized as mass storage device and you have no yellow triangle in that case, I started RKAndroid Flash tool, let it boot to flash. Then a yellow triangle appeared, clisked on update, selected the correct *.ini File and it worked. The tool which was still run recognized it as "Loader usb.." :-)

this approach DID NOT work on my win8 64-bit machine. I tried it a few seconds ago.
