I also bricked my Mini M8S using the method described by Digital_me. Then spent two evenings trying to revive it with a bootable SD card - no luck. Finally came across the solution described by boro_boy_80 on XDA and it worked like a charm. WiFi works as it should and now the box is fully functional.

hi! is not possible to rebuild the .img file posted by VADIATOR to OTA ? I have installed the ota version 104L03 posted by Krakatau , automatically the system updated the box to rom 105L03 . Unfortunately the speed of wifi is not improved . Thank you all for your reply and sorry for my english!!!

As much as I like digital_me's suggested method to fix the WiFi weakness over the SD card update I am afraid to brick my box (which BTW is still in transit, but will most likely have the WLAN glitch anyways).
What I do NOT understand is why SOME people could do the upgrade based on his suggested steps, and others ended up with bricks?
Assuming that all followed his clear instructions there should be little room for error.
I find similar mixed results in a Russian forum where the WiFi driver fix was apparently originally developed and published.
Also surprising to me is the fact that official updates by the manufacturers apparently STILL do NOT include the working adjustment for the limited WLAN transfer rates.
Are there different WLAN chips in the race, for the otherwise identical Mini M8S box?
Could this be related to different 'versions' of this Mini M8S box? After all there are >1400 different vendors for this specific model on Alibaba alone...
How can we identify the exact hardware in our boxes? Any tear downs, parts lists etc available?
How can we distinguish 'clones' or 'alternates'; what system files or revisions should be visible in the O/S prior to applying this patch?
Reading the horror stories of reviving a bricked TV box is rather discouraging.
I want to be prepared and avoid this hair raising debacle if I possibly can.
Thanks!

Oh my, my M8S had indeed a short iife:
came preconfigured with 106L03 (built Apr-11) two days ago, ran fine with fast Wifi, so I did not see a need to fix anyhing.
It accepted sideloading of some useful apps from Google Play store.
Really nice box, fast and low on power (3W, never exceeded 5W, temps around 42C), while really tiny in size. I was happy - WAS..
On day #2 it started to act weird (would not allow to run or even DEinstall other web browsers), after a power cycle it hung in boot screen 'MBOX'.
Factory reset did not fix the issue, the box shows an odd 'Android starting optimizing app 1/1' (down from "/41" apps in previous resets) and hangs afterwards.
Nowhere can I find a 106L03, not even 105; apparently only an old but buggy 104 is floating around (I grabbed mini m8s_S905_IMG_104L03), will it update to 106 OverTheAir?
What happened in my box, why is the Android launcher acting this way? I swear that I did not flash one byte, let the kernel files in place, etc.
Which method is the safest to breathe back life in my M8S? I want to use it for playing and watching, not for repairing or as a door stop!
Thanks!

you need to make the openelec upgrade first
from xda forum....................................
try this fist

Then I flashed the full image with Vadiator fix using a bootable microsd prepared with u-boot.bin.sd.bin (868.864 bytes). OTA update then worked and updated the system to 105L03. WiFi flies now like an aeroplane! 46 Mbps download and 46 Mbps upload speed on the Internet and some 10 m away from the router. Thank you again Vadiator! This box is now a real value with your fix!
For those who want to safely boost the WiFi speed, forget the USB cable method with driver problems and transfer errors, here's a safer and faster way to flash the .img files to your box:
1. Get the attached Attachment 3754515(from xda forum) containing all the needed tools (Amlogic bootcard maker, u-boot.bin.sd.bin 868.864 bytes and aml_sdc_burn.ini file).
2. Get a clean microsd card and insert it into the reader on your pc. Open Amlogic bootcardmaker.exe, select your card, check yes to partition and format, chose u-boot.bin.sd.bin and click Make. Format your card when prompted. In must end with a Success box.
Note that you must use u-boot.bin.sd.bin with the size of 868.864 bytes (provided in attached the tools package). Bootloader.img from the Mini M8S OTA archive renamed to u-boot.bin does not boot.
3. On the prepared microsd card, copy aml_sdc_burn.ini. Rename miniM8S_104L3_Fix_WiFi_SDwrite_by_vadiator.img (https://yadi.sk/d/3JKuyWGoreotx) to aml_upgrade_package.img and copy it on the microsd, too. You must end with 2 files on the card:
- aml_sdc_burn.ini
- aml_upgrade_package.img
4. Insert the microsd in the Mini M8S and power on while holding the reset button pressed with a paperclip or toothpick. When the upgrade will start by showing the green robot and progress bar, release the reset button and don't touch anything until it finishes and restarts.
5. Now you have a 104L03 system with full wifi speed. Launch OTA and update to 105L03 to have the latest system.
6. Enjoy!
Note: The aml_sdc_burn.ini contains values for the type of flash format, like in the USB Burning Tool:
0 – Do not erase flash
1 – Normal erase
3 – Erase all
4 – Force erase all
If you want to change values use Notepad++ or DOS Edit to preserve format, don't edit in Windows Notepad.
