Step by Step Instructions on How to Install Openelec on MXQ Pro+ Dual Boot Via SD Card

I took the time to write up these step by step instructions for setting up openELEC on dual boot on the MXQ Pro+ because in doing so myself I had to ask a lot of questions and got some awesome help in return. The goal was to include the help I received and clarify the process. I spent lots of time asking my questions on this link: Openelec for Tronsmart Vega S95 - Instructions for Openelec
When you complete the install you will find openELEC fast, responsive, very skimpy on the box resources and a better way to run KODI versus versus Android.
Note that if you want to use Android all you have to do is pull the boot card and then reboot.
I also wrote some instructions on writing an alternate ROM to replace the stock ROM that came with these boxes. This Tronsmart ROM works great and is simple enough to install. If interested check this link:
    http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...ware-with-twrp
Good luck and hope this helps

How to Install openELEC on MXQ Pro+ Dual Boot Via SD Card
Step 1 – Installing Dual Boot capability on MXQ Pro+
    • Format your SD/SDHC card using FAT 32. Its recommended that you use a good formatter for this purpose, SD Formatter - https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/for.../eula_windows/
    • Go to this site: https://yadi.sk/d/srrtn6kpnsKz2. open the folder update_uboot, open the folder called tronsmart_vega_s95, open the folder called meta. If you have a different box then select the appropriate folder.
    • Download the 2 files in the appropriate folder and copy - paste to your formatted SD card
    • Boot your MXQ Pro+ box to Android, insert the SD card containing the meta files. Open Apps and then Update and Backup, Under the Local section click select, then go down the page of files until you locate S95_uboot_vega_meta.zip_ click it and select update. Your box will reboot. You won't notice much and it will reboot again to Android.
    • The process can take some time, so be patient. A few minutes is all it takes.
    • That is all for step one. u-boot should now have been modified and dual boot enabled.
    • The SD Card can be formatted and used for step 2.

Step 2 – Creating an openELEC Boot SD Card
    • It is recommended that Windows users use Win32DiskImager to format your SD Card for this step.
    • Open this link - https://yadi.sk/d/srrtn6kpnsKz2
      • Open the Vega s95 folder, then open the openelec folder, then the sd_and_usb folder, then the appropriate folder for your box, then open the 20160708 folder.
      • Download this file: "Pro_OpenELEC-Amlogic.aarch64-Vega_S95-6.95.3.img.xz
      • Extract the file and you have a file with the same name, but with a .img extension.
    • Format your SD Card again with SD Formatter, or your chosen formatter, use FAT 32.
    • Start/Run WIN32DiskImager. Locate the img file "Pro_OpenELEC-Amlogic.aarch64-Vega_S95-6.95.3.img" and select the correct location for the SD Card you inserted. Select write.
    • You can open the SD Card and check it. You should see 4 files, SYSTEM, dtb.img, kernel.img and S905_autoscript
    • Shut down your MXQ Pro+ - I pulled the plug. Insert the SD Card into the box. Reboot the box.
    • Within a few minutes openELEC should boot into the setup screen.
    • If after a few minutes the box fails to boot into OpenELEC, try a reboot on the same card a couple of more times. It has taken me as many as three attempts to get to OE on first boot. As you have seen, once past the first boot, OE boots very quickly, runs very well (thanks RISKy Dude).
    • If it doesn't boot after several attempts, try using a USB card reader and/or a different SD Card. See this post for SD card recommendations: Openelec for Tronsmart Vega S95 - FreakTab.com
    • If problems persist, got to this post for help: http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...ega-s95/page12

My thanks go to all who helped me when I had problems, including scooter2014, RISKy Dude, Trebor (the original poster), kanacnik1 and to balbes150 who wrote the awesome scripts.

Thanks doggyofone, very good guide .
I follow your instructions, the box works well now.
But the remote don't work on openelec, it's that the same for you?

I'm using a Logitech keyboard with a wifi dongle. No issues for me. The remote that came with the box turns the box on/off and I haven't really used it for anything else.

        Ok thanks.
I have also logitech unifying keyboard. It works. Remote is good to play / pause. It's strange on my remote the off button on openelec doesn't work.
On button works because if I understand, when the box is off, the box uses the android rom.
The remote.conf file into openelec is not the good one I think. Do you know where I can find a compatible one? Or extract from the android rom if they are compatibles?

You are welcome. I updated the card to the OpenELEC 7.0 img that balbes150 posted at this link - https://yadi.sk/d/gZW-PXc7qU4v7/ - in the folder named "20160609" . I haven't tried BT or wifi, but don't need either. I'm now running on OE 7.0. I haven't noticed much difference, other than it recognizes my SD card without having to set up a SMB share. Could have just been my system issue.
Just reimage the SD card with the first file "OpenELEC_Amlogic_arm64...img.xz, pop it into the box and boot.
You can update to 6.9.5 as an interim step in a very simple way, go to the same link as above and then open the 20160524 folder then open the 6.95.3 folder. Download DTB, SYSTEM and kernel. Then copy and paste DTB, System and kernel to the SD card and replace what is there. The new build is 6.95.3.7.0, kernel Linux 3.14.
            .

It looks like balbes150 has moved the links. Try this link Openelec New Links , open update_uboot, then tronsmart_vega_s95, then meta. Download the files, then continue with the original instructions. Let me know how you make out.

I ordered a MXQ Pro Plus, I only want to use openelec, does it have any bugs or is it running perfect? Also can i install it on the box, instead of booting on a sd card?

It works well via SD card. You will have to look around to see if someone has come up with a OE for installing on the box.

Read through this post: Openelec for Tronsmart Vega S95 - FreakTab.com The discussions regarding cards starts around page 9. I'm using a standard Adata 32 gb SD and have used a Sandisk Ultra 8gb. It seems to be different for different users as to what works. There is also info about some boxes needing card readers.
If you want to change the rom on the box to good software check out this post: MXQ Pro+ - Instructions for Installing sd-robots firmware With TWRP - FreakTab.com
and read through this one - SD ROBOTS mxq pro plus firmware link. - FreakTab.com
It replaces the stock firmware with a Tronsmart ROM that works.

                              hello Doggyofone,
Is the "reboot to NAND" which provide the option to boot android without removing the SD card from it's slot is included in the shutdown menu in this OPENELEC image which is written on the SD card same as in WETEK and OPENELEC for MXIII Plus? I am asking because I try to choose between buying additional MX III plus or purchase the Telos which have the H.265 10 bit advantage.
                              thx !
