Thanks for your help ladyjack. Even confirmation is very useful to allay fears of not having done something properly. And prahjister, yes, I believe the cable is the next stop. I am using a double male cable that came with a bd-drive enclosure, which seems to work in that capacity...so something purpose made may be the better course of action here. Noted the push start before connecting box. Now I have to decide whether to sacrifice a couple of cables or buy one....decisions, decisions, lol. Thanks for your help too prahjister, double for figuring out the Frankenrom in the first place.

I'm no sloutch when it comes to custom rom's on phones tablets etc, but this is somewhat driving me insane.
Even went the length to install fresh win 8 x32 as was on win 10 x64 with no success.
Did full updates of win 8.1
Tried with pin reset as i put in usb cable, tried both 7 and 8 usb burning tools.
Drivers install as normal on both OS's, even did manual install, tried the cc leaner and uninstall program, still nothing.
Was absolutely buzzing seeing this firmware was created by op, really grateful, but why oh why is this such a pain in the rear?

I had to put in an order for some aquarium supplies so found there was an addon USB male-to-male for $3 bucks I could throw in so ordered that as well. I mean, that's about the last thing that I can do! I was thinking about this last night and the paranoia gears started turning and I got to wondering whether the factory put in some anti-tampering whatever beyond a certain serial number or something. I had to shake my head at that and think, "Why would they?" Well, they wouldn't. That's just daft, right?
Anyway, I'm not going to stress on this. There's the new box out now with a 912 chip and I may get that when the price goes down a bit. For me, the only real issue I have is that the audio pass through doesn't work, and that annoys me so much it's surprising really, lol. Anyway, I got Kodi set up and it looks fantastic with all our media covers scrolling and now that I have that all organized properly, the box itself is kind of immaterial as I can set up a new installation pretty quick by pointing to our library. So, in the end, I guess I got my $50 bucks out of it and for a two channel bedroom system it's not a bad solution (should we ever get a screen in the bedroom that is, lol). Still though, frustrating that we're missing something here. Dunno, maybe ANOTHER cable again?

I disagree with not stressing, as for i personally i wanted it rooted so i could put in root explorer for example and remove bloatware, even install custom rom's.
Kodi is causing an issue due to it being installed as a system app and full of bloatware, where in some repos playign, crash which i never have an issue with on phones or tablet.
I paid £35 for the box and if i knew it be this difficult to achieve something which from years of experience dealing with rom's etc, even the imito mx1 and qx2 media sticks, i would not bought it.
To see this firmware available which would achieve the reult i want like many being created and not able to use it, is the stressing part lol

This is how i connected my nexbox a95x after 5 hours torture:
- Install the the tool to a win7 32bit
- Power off the box and plug off the charger from the box
- Put a match or toothpick to the AV hole to the click sound and hold it
- Now with the your third hand plug the usb to the pc and the box
- Hold the toothpick for 30 sec
- if you are lucky the box is pop up in the Device Manager and in the usb burn tool
I hope it will help youCheers!

ladyjack "I also kept getting the low power error. What finally worked for me was to load the image into USB, wait till it is verified, press START, and then plug the usb into the box. For some reason, connecting the box first and then pushing Start always resulted in low power error. There seems to be no rhyme or reason why it works one way for some and a different way for others. (i.e. Plug in box and press Start vs. Press Start first and then plug in box),"
Thanks for this. Saved me some time and reduced my stress level.

Hope this will help.

I have notice that each major Windows update removes something.
It's tantamount to Microsoft hacking.
