Thanks for this. Is there a way to flash a custom ROM without clearing the user data such as settings, installed apps, etc? This could be useful when updating to a newer release of the same ROM. Or perhaps this method doesn't clear user data?

No there isn't only you use a CWM Recovery and make a Backup of your APPs and Settings.
As alternative you can use Holo Backup.

thx for the howto, but i have one question... in the guide it says following:

Then Click “Run” for update. This procedure will take around 3 minutes, please be patient!

Do NOT unplug USB cable during recovery/upgrade!

After Flashing your Stick Starts Automatic. Please wait 5 min to Finished.

The last step i dont understand, do i unplug the stick from the computer and plug it back into my tv or must i wait 5 minutes after flashing?

So its not going to mode where the computer recognizes it the stick and asks for the driver. on the custom ROM I noticed a REBOOT App. and I see "reboot to recovery and reboot to Bootloader" Will either of these commands do the samething as putting a stick in reset hole?

Yes you can usw this. Take Boot to Bootloader thats Works.

You can not Flash from Mac. You need a VM and Windows 7 Trial from Microsoft.

This means that the Stick takes 5 Minutes for the first Boot Up for Android.
You can after Flash Unplug the Stick and Connect it to your TV.
