I just got the PMID701C, and I saw that someone was trying to create a custom ROM, I was just wondering if they had any idea how long it would be before it was done.

soon but maybe not that soon...

I hope to get a full ROM dump tonight. Then in order: I would like to make a working recovery so we can return to stock. Make a "lite" or bloat removed version of the stock rom. Then a custom rom based on stock, preferred apps, tweaks, etc. Then look at ICS as a possibility, ICS is new to me in general tho.

I am no Bob but it looks to me like we have a pretty advanced and reasonably well thought out android in the stock rom. This is big change for me as most of my previous android tablet experience has been with the Pandigital Novel and that thing is a mess! I think we may have got lucky with these polardroid (what I am calling mine now) tablets.

Me or someone else might have a ROM in a few days or if we run into trouble a couple weeks. But I think that you could get a lot of milage out of this tablet with just rooting and dropping gapps (the package of google apps: gmail, maps, etc) on it as is.

No clue but within about 4 days we've figured out full root access and active android market so far, so we're moving quickly toward that hopefully. Although, with full root and a working market, the stock rom is not that bad, especially if you use a custom launcher (I use GO Launcher from the Android Market) and manually uninstall all the junk apps that it came with.

You guys seriously... take a look at my Google Play "patch kit". It is a PROPER Gplay install
This is all the latest Gplay files and they all work PERFECT "together" which is super important!!!!
Most the other Gplay files out there you download are a comgloberation of updated and non-updated files. It took me a LONG TIME and lots of work to get all the proper files.

          So do this:
          1) Make sure you install superuser.apk
          2) Use root explorer to make system RW or use the remount command I posted for you guys (remount I think would be better).
          3) Install my patch kit and run it per my instructions.

It will install Gplay PROPERLY in /system where some files MUST BE to work correctly. And I bet you will have the bomb!

          My patch kit is here:

          Bob
"Pzebacz im, bo nie wiedzą, co czynią"
"Прости им, они не ведают, что творят"
"Perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno"
"Vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun"
"Vergeef hen want ze weten niet wat ze doen"
"Pardonne-leur car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font"
"Perdónalos porque no saben que lo que hacen"
"Oprosti im, jer ne znaju što čine"
"Forgive them as they know not what they do"

I just tried this by using root explorer to make /system RW and am getting "no permission"error with your patch even though I can manually write to system. Any ideas?

I first installed "OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk" successfully, then attempted to install "GoogleServicesFramework-signed.apk" but the installation failed for some reason. I moved on to "SetupWizard.apk", which was successful, and finally "vending-3.1.3-signed.apk", which also was successful.

This gives me a fully working version of the Android Market (only the Icon is the old Icon, launching actually shows the Google Play interface)
Will this method allow downloading without crashing? I had found the apk for the market and installed but crashes and closes.

Installing The Google Play Store .APK Alone Isn't Enough

Originally posted by mechanics200 View Post

It's not enough to just install the Google Play Store app itself. The tablet comes mostly rooted out of the box, but write access to the /system folder is turned off by default. Full root access to the /system folder is needed to install EVERYTHING you need for the Play Store to work as it should. The procedures we've discovered and have shared here will help people to do some of what must be done to have the Play Store work as it should, and not crash on you.

However, per Finless, there's still more that must be done so that the Play Store properly decides which apps are truly compatible with the tablet, and which aren't. Some of this has to do with recent changes as to how all this works on Google's end, in their transition from the Android Market to the Play Store.

Working together, we've come a long way in a few days. Despite this, since some of us have only been working on this for less than a week now, I, for one, consider the whole set of procedures to be very much still a work in progress.

Ultimately, I foresee the full process will end up being a combination of Bob's patch kit and procedures with our methods to gain full root access and enabling ADB communications with the tablet.

In the meantime, I, for one, will do all I can to help you.

                          Hello!

Bob, your points are quite valid. You have done so much already, and you've taught ME quite a bit about all this without your even realizing it. Certainly, no one can expect for you to have to do EVERYTHING to make this happen! It's good that artistlogic and Zarealius are involved in making this as painless for everyone as possible.

Organizing all these different procedures as a sticky (or a series of stickies) will definitely help to keep everyone from having to answer the same questions over and over again all over the place. Reading the current thread has kept me from doing the very same thing myself!

After I post this, I'll look at your video, and try to figure out how to 'tweak' it for the 701C. Once I do, I'll write it all up, and submit it for inclusion in the new forum.

For me, getting ADB working was a big step, and is definitely necessary to go very far with all this. I didn't know someone else here already had a procedure for doing this. The way *I* activated ADB was somewhat different - as was the way I specified in the other tutorial, which all began by my being unable to get that zip file to extract properly for me. Once we all have the correct files and procedures down pat, it shouldn't be any problem at all to accomplish what we're wanting to do here.

Again, I'm willing to help in any way I can, even though a lot of this is new for me, also.

                            Hello!

I finally pulled it all off, but had to do part of it by moving some of the apps to /system manually. I can't begin to explain how I did all this, as I am unsure exactly how I had to do it. Also, I only needed to hit the tablet's RESET button, and didn't seem to need to do a 'factory reset'.

It seems as if the script's working a little bit differently on the 701C. Near the end, when Finless runs terminal.sh and Root Explorer, I noticed that on HIS unit, it triggers the Superuser app. It doesn't for me. I'm thinking this may be because the 701C isn't truly fully rooted.

We MAY have to use ADB or Root Explorer to manually do the many of the things done in the script. Since Finless doesn't have a 701C, we're going to have to pull together to write a script that will automatically execute on our tablets fully and properly.

What's really important here is our finally having the correct files on hand to properly install a fully and correctly functioning Play Store. For THAT, we owe Bob a debt of gratitude!

Did you snag BusyBoxInstaller? I noticed after I did I had the correct permission even though I had already purchased and installed RootExplorer... Not reallly sure whats up with that. Also I dug through the drivers on my PC hopeing to find some way to have it identify my Tablet, I was successful but it classified as an Android phone "Android ADB" there were 2 other options i could switch it to both with ADB or Android ADB in the title. Not sure how helpful that is but I share everything I find as you all know already lol.

As for Bob I think a debt of gratitude is only the beginning, he may not be the inovator but hes defiantely OUR innovator and the one to set us straight when we drop the ball or get turned around. Which reminds me where do we go to donate to him or his cause?

No donations required guys. You are all doing a great job together. All I ask is keep it up and pay it back to others in need of help

Man I assumed busybox was at least in every ROM out there. I guess not.

What you need to see if you have for full root e.g. a proper root with superuser prompt.

                                1) The SU binary in /system/bin. If not see if you can find a SU binary for your processor. I have one for both the RK29 and RK28. If you want to try it let me know and I will post it.

                                2) Get superuser.apk from the market. Again I have one and it may work for you. Let me know if you want it. Superuser.apk is made by ChainDD and it should work on any Gingerbread tablet.

                                3) Busybox! Busybox is almost a must for root work. Every ROM I have taken apart has a least some form of busbox. Look in /system/bin and see if it is there.
