P.S. I expect to have some new releases for this both of these models very soon.

    Awesome news!

BTW - I'm a bit confused with your XDA post... the post title doesn't match the Freaktab link you provided in the post.

I forgot to update the title. It has been updated and now the post title and link match the thread.

ZIPs signed with Google Test Keys...

ShaunMT - I've tried, but I may not be searching correctly... is there a novice way to sign existing ZIPs with Google Test Keys so that we can flash them using your modified recovery?

EDIT - I found a link to a signing package that worked (tried several others that didn't) over at RootzWiki.

The ZIP package that I really wanted to flash was Aroma File Manager (which wasn't signed with Google Test Keys until I changed that)... too bad none of the partitions will mount, rendering the file manager useless.

Any ZIP packages out there that just mounts your partitions?

Glad you found something. The only thing I found that worked right was signapk.jar which requires unix.
Be aware that the updater-script for most packagers may need to be changed. Most updater-scripts I've seen use busybox commands, but our current recovery doesn't have a full busybox. Also, you may need to change the mount instructions.

I think, I've used AFM on my tablet... and I don't think I had to make and changes to it... although I may have been using a copy of the CWM or TWRP I've been working on... or I may be mistaken entirely, maybe I tried it out on my SGS3 instead of the tablet.

Any ZIP packages out there that just mounts your partitions?
Not sure. Would be easy to create one, but what good would it do without a way to browse the file system? What was the goal here? Maybe ADB access would be work?

Didn't realise that the recovery partition was where the busy box had to lie... assumed system would've worked.

If the partitions could be mounted before flashing the AFM for use then we'd be able to browse.

I didn't either, but I have not been able to get any packages that used busybox to mount partitions to work with the modified stock recovery... they only work with CWM / TWRP. In fact, I bet this is the problem with AFM... I bet it uses busybox to mount the partitions and only worked for me because I was using CWM or TWRP at the time.

Well... I guess we could write an updater script that just mounted the partitions then exited and left them mounted... this might allow AFM to see them. You'd probably want to write another updater script to unmount them when done.

I get CWM or TWRP working to my satisfaction and this won't be an issue anymore...

Makes sense. I've made use of AFM on all my past / current Android devices... of course, wonderful people put in a lot of time to make those custom recoveries available for those devices.

I guess that would serve more than just AFM, probably any other ZIP package as well.

I can't thank you enough shaunmt for this rom and root. My tablet was semi bricked for months. I can't wait for your custom rom when ever your ready to release it.

                    volume buttons not working

I was going to try loading all of this but I am having a problem with my volume buttons. When I am using the tablet in normal mode and press the volume up it will sometimes turn the volume up and sometimes act as a back button and kick me out of what I am doing.

therefore when I go into recovery the volume buttons will not respond and it just reboots the tablet.

Does anyone know if this is a hardware problem or a software issue?

Is there a work around to not use the buttons?

nextbook8p12 changed in new coming out product and your root method not working.

                      Hi dear ShaunMT,

Thank you very much for all your works. With that I am able to root my 8P12 that I purchased in 2012 black Friday.

This year I got another one, it still 8P12, but I notice several different here, and try all your method and other ways that I can find online, no lucky so far.

                      Here is the different:
                      lower resolution!! 640X480 I guess;
                      Kernel : 3.0.8+
                      Android version 4.0.3
                      Build : V1.0.18.IML74K.eng.root.20120306.212813_HW:1.0.0.0
Prosesor : not sure(but I guess the same)
the recovery version is 4.0 instead of 3.xx

                      any idea?

Thanks for all your works here again.

This is the first I've heard of new revisions to this model. I didn't even know this model was still available for purchase anywhere.

Most, if not all, of the current Nextbook models can be rooted with Cydia Impactor. You might give that a try. If you are successful, please dump the ROM before making any further changes to the system. I'd love to have a look at it.

                        ShaunMT

P.S. Are you sure it's an 8P12 and not the even older 8PSE ?

The build date and os 4.0.3 make me think it is older than the "Black Friday" 8P12 models. The 8PSE was similar (in fact it looked exactly the same and had the same packaging) but it had a RockChip processor instead of the Amlogic processor used in the newer models.

If it is an 8PSE, Finless has a ROM for it posted here in the forums.

ShaunMT good work man, I used your files to get playstore on my next8p12 but am curious if you might know if the headphone jack on this model supports microphone or just the mic built into the device?
also the recovery and rom your working on is the rom an updated android version or is that still a ways away? Im looking for 4.1 and would be glad to beta test and can get you catlogs for anything you wish tested!

edit: do you know if anyone has had any luck adding a android 4.1 rom and got it to work on this device?

If I can ever figure out how to get UBIFS support working, I should hopefully be able to create some updated ROMs. Unfortunately, I've been way too busy to do much development lately.

A few days ago, I received what appears to be an official 4.1.1 firmware for the Next8P12. I'm not exactly sure where it came from or why it was never publicly released. I intend to test it, package it, and post it though.

I'm hoping to have a slow week at the office this coming week. Maybe I can sneek in some dev time and get some new files released by Christmas.

P.S. I don't know about the mic. I'd say try it and find out.

Thanks for the quick reply! I truly hope that 4.1.1 update package works! I am hoping to get this working with a few specific apps that will only run on 4.1+ for a christmas present! (I should have done a little more research on this before I made an impulse buy but it was 50$ and I couldnt pass it up lol)

Edit - If nothing else I will try to change the apk's im attempting to install with apktool once I setup a new build environment. I probably wont be of much help with the UBIFS support but im not good with that stuff

Yeah. That's basically what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to port a UBIFS source repo from another tablet to Nextbook, but I haven't got a bootable build yet.
