Pads are much worse than epoxy or good glue.
Graph in Post 1 shows my test gives 11°C poorer than thermal paste.
Would be nice to see your comparison if possible, pad vs paste ???

This is my solution of the problem with the heat:
40x40x10mm Evercool fan on 5V , connected on the back of the USB:
Results:
Original HS - max temp with StressCPU- 82C
40x40x11 Aluminium HS with lifted lid about 2mm - 80C
40x40x10mm fan on 5V with modded lid cover (30 holes) and stock HS - 67C
40x40x10mm fan on 5V with modded lid cover and stock HS - 57C
40x40x10mm fan on 5V with modded and lifted lid about 2mm and stock HS - 53C
The box is practically noiseless, absolutely quiet with this fan.Last edited by mirbg; 07 February 2018, 13:51.

The fan 'sucks' air out of the device, instead of blowing it in.
I found you can fit some inside with the std. HS and a small lift of the lid.
Are you sure it is 12V ? Most won't run at 3.3V, but will if rated at 5V.

Fan inside with lifted lid will hardly make any noticeable difference - in my case the temps went down from 80 to 74C degrees. It just needs more fresh air from outside...
