Change resolution from real 720p to real 1080p on the fly useing just 1 kernel (POC)

    Hi all.
Im writeing here to inform about new ways to change resolution on our devices.
There will be no need to use difrent kernels to just swich the res.
You will need just 1 kernel 720p and you can swich the res on the fly to real 1080p
just by using software swich in settings.
This is work in progress, but i was allready able to change the res from 720p to real 1080p with stock 720p
    kernel.
So if some one want to try just serch the net for latest N90 tablet firmware and flash it to your tv stick,
then flash just the stock kernel of your device using finless tools.
after flash go to settings>display>mode and change from normal to hd.
    the resolution will change.
Further investigation is needed but i think if we work together, it can be acomplished.
    please post your findings here

I flashed the cube rom that made you discover this , i found out that they changed the dpi and the
Intensity the display info app reports a scaling factor of 1.5 , so they scaled the 1280x800 resolution to be 1920x1200 , so i guess this means it is not a true resolution meaning that the image is still rendered at 1280x720 then scaled due to intensity to 1920x1200 ,
please feel free to correct me if i am wrong because i am very interested in this resolution switching if it is possible it will really transfer our sticks To a new level.

to me it looks like its real 1080p.
all apps report 1080p not 720p like when the screan was just upscaled.

        I have a feeling it's not true 1080 but I will have a look.

There is an excellent app in the android store called "display tester" it gives you all the info you
Need about your kernel display (like resolution and color depth) , that's how i knew that the
Resolution is not true one , it is not 1920x1080 either , it is a scaled 1920x1200

If you run an 1080p video with exact resolution of 1920x1200 and set the video player like mx player
To display a 100% scaling option (1:1 pixel mapping) you will notice that there is still black bars above And below the video which indicates that the internal resolution is more than 1920x1080 as the Display tester indicates a resolution of 1920x1200 but unfortunately it also indicates that it is a scaled Resolution by a scale factor of 1.5 By changing the density , (1280x720 x1.5 scaling)

As for the display looking like 1080p i admit that it is better than the normal upscaled version It can be due to using a better scaling algorithm (like Lanczos 3 + edge sharpening) which will Be much better than the normal bilinear upscaling algorithm

That's hard to believe! I know for fact in the 1080 kernels the resolution array is loaded with the dumber 1920 and 1080. So maybe this is a hardware thing from the HDMI chip and cannot be really changed?

That's what i am saying , it is not a true 1080p kernel it is a scaled up 1920x1200
To be sent through HDMI connection it has to be scaled down to 1080p which is
The maximum HDMI resolution supported by almost all TVs , thats why the image is
stretched in the vertical direction i.e the circles are ellipses when viewed through
a TV that is connected via HDMI.

But the real problem here is not the none standard resolution of 1920x1200 , because
I think this can be adjusted , but the fact that it is not a true 1920x1200 , it is a scaled
Resolution by changing the intensity , i really wish to be wrong as a switchable resolution
Kernel for me is a dream that came true , so any body please correct me if i am wrong here.

                      Hey Guys,
i like your discussion very much and perhaps i can help you with a short test movie.
I just did a short 1080p25 testclip for your. If there is any scalig operation, no matte which kernel do you use, i believe you'll see it.

I just played this clip on my CX-921 720p Stock Firmware, output scaled to 1080p played on MX Player and it looks quite terrible!

                        ok.
i found a comand to change the resolution.
you can change it by adb or terminal app.
all apps will display resolution proper to change you made.
so if you use 720p kernel and use this command to change to 1080
res will change and any apps like antutu or xbmc will say that you have 1080p.
the performance will decrese also as in 1080p kernel.
i cant tell if its real 1080p or not but its usfull.
if you flash 1080p kernel and decrese res by this command the performance will be alot beter.
lets say you have 1080p kernel becouse you want wach full hd movies but you also want to play some games that are realy slow on 1080p kernel by using this command to change res you will get your game to play nice without flashing another kernel.
i will be traying to implement this into roms.
only bad info is that lcd density wont change but i will figure it out;p
                        thats all for now;p
                        waiting for feedback

                        Terminal for 1080p kernel
                        Code:
                        su
                        am display-size 1280x720
                        Terminal for 720p kernel
                        Code:
                        su
                        am display-size 1920x1080
                        ADB for 1080p kernel
                        Code:
                        pathtoadb/adb.exe shell am display-size 1280x720
                        ADB for 720p kernel
                        Code:
                        pathtoadb/adb.exe shell am display-size 1920x1080

Change resolution from real 720p to real 1080p on the fly useing just 1 kerne...

Maybe we can get Petrus to make us an app for this????

I'm not sure he watches all the forums...but if you post a thread in the app DEV forum and send him a PM he can get to it. Just let him know the commands he needs.
