Yes the kernel is responsible for the hardware drivers, lan, wifi, etc.. If you want it just for XBMC, with 1080p kernel , films will still not play smooth in 1080p mode, unless you use external player for xbmc like MX player with hardware acceleration. But like I said the 1080p kernel will make the box HOT! so you do need a bigger heatsink/cooler/fan.

Its a custom version, works fine on rk devices. And yes its patched for DTS passthrough.

I think it is due to the GPU which must downscale the 1080p video to 720p and then upscale it to 1080p - what is the point of doing it???
