Thanks for all the help but I'm done trying with this thing, the owner dropped it before it bricked so I'm thinking the screen just finally decided to go (it's cracked in more than one place).

It seems the screen wasn't screwed after all, it seems it just didn't want to boot into recovery using an 8 gb sd card. Either way I'm still done with it, no matter what I try I keep getting that cannot attach mtd5 error.

mtd5 is the system partition... if you can get to recovery, it should be possible to reformat the system partition and flash a ROM...

All of my ROMs reformat the system before flashing anyhow...

Ok, I've been able to verify that this thing is toast (same device as the one in the rom porting thread).

I dumped the log after redoing everything from factory reset to installing the new rom & there are tons of errors in there:

I wish I'd have known about that log sooner, it would've saved me a whole lot of trouble & headaches.

Yeah... those bad blocks are the problem... the only way to fix that would be a low level format that mapped the bad blocks so they get skipped...

unfortunately, I don't think we have the tools available to do that...
