Arnova 10b G3 ICS - Stock ROM - latest version available!

    UPDATE July 6 2012
Yet another version of of the 10b G3 ICS ROM. This one is a user dump from J_Weidner over on Arctablet.com. Some 10b G3 tablets distributed in Germany, etc seem to have different screen hardware. If you flashed other 10b G3 ICS ROMs and your screen did not work, then this ROM will probably fix that.

Below is the link for both stock ROMs. I am calling this other version the German version as this is where these tabs with different screens are showing up.

    Ok folks....

FIRST a special thanks to FreakTab user AlleyTrotter for dumping this ROM!
Everyone should thank him for getting this dump out while others (cough... you know who you are) held onto it for whatever reason! I made a post asking for a dump and Alley stepped up and in a few hours had a dump.
    Alley, YOU DA MAN!

You now all have a REAL stock ROM for the Arnova 10b G3. And let me just say it is the latest ROM from Arnova we know of to date! Yes there is another 10b G3 ROM out there but after a lot of analyzing and research by me, this for sure is a newer release than what is out there right now.
    1) The kernel has a newer build date
    2) The system and resource files all are newer too.

So as far as I know, this is the latest available. If Arnova would properly version thier releases and document changes we would all not be guessing like we are now. Totaly SHAME on Arnova for this approach!

Anyway so let me explain what this ROM is:

    1) Alley dumped his ROM but I asked ONLY for backup.img. Backup.img is in fact the stock ROM in a package. So no matter WHAT he installed or did to his tablet backup.img is not touched in any way! It is stock!

    2) I took backup.img apart and did NOTHING TO IT other than to make it into it's parts and a flashable ROM kit. You cannot flash backup.img directly so at a minimum it must be made into it's parts to flash it. That is all that has been done to it. Unlike others out there, I did not try to repackage the ROM into an update.img as this can have reprocussions TRUST ME. It's best to have a ROM just like how it would be flashed by the manufacturer!

    3) On this ROM unlike other RK29 ROMs, by default kernel.img is built in boot.img. So THERE IS NO kernel.img to flash. I have modified the flash tool to uncheck kernel.img as needed. This is so you do not get errors using the RKAndroid flash tool. DO NOT try to check kernel in the tool or you will get an error!!!!!

OK so thats about it. PLEASE..... read the readme.txt file in the ROM kit for more information.

So with the mumbo jumbo over with ........ Here is the ROM download:

    ROM -> Arnova 10b G3 - ICS - Stock ROM (125 megs)

    ROM -> Arnova 10b G3 - ICS - Stock ROM German Version (125 megs)

    Enjoy,
    Bob

P.S. for the 10 G2 people out there... do not bother. This ROM will not work on the 10 G2. I do not know if it will work on the 10b G2 but I highly doubt it! It seems there are more hardware changes on the 10b G3 vs 10 G2 that the kernel will not even boot! I will look into this farther but it is not a good sign about getting ICS on the 10 G2

Oh and folks... I am working on the root now!

I am thinking of debloating this thing too... e.g. making it like my 1.5 ROMs and providing Petrus APP injector.
    What do you think?

How about Face Lock as discussed on XDA here:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1405790
    You want it?

Also the file system is not ext4. I can speed this sucker up. While I cannot test it on my 10 G2, I bet I can get ext4 and a faster working system.
I also maybe can provided "hotspot" support or tethered wifi.... Maybe....
But I will need dedicated testers!

Let me know what your looking for....

      Hi Bob,

Not so sure about Face Lock but a definite yes to debloat and ext4 - happy to test.

I'll see if I can dump my rom - the instructions on the other thread were for Linux but I'll have a search until you're back online for doing it on Windows.

      Cheers

Unfortunately to do it on Windows requires some kind of simple "root" permissions to be able to push rkdump to /data. We have a post for how to do it on windows but unless you can find an APP that gives some kind of root permissions on ICS, it's not going to happen.
On gingerbreead OS you could because there were apps that would give you root permissions. Not full root mind you but enough to be able to push rkdump to /data and run it! BUT to my knowledge no one has found a ICS temp root APP to do it. That might exist... but I am not aware of it yet.

Well I have the ADB drivers installed but ADB can't see the device so can't try.
There are actually three options when you connect via USB, media device, camera or mass storage.

I've set to mass storage and enable USB debugging and have been able to install the ADB drivers fine but ADB doesn't see it.

Probably not an issue if there's no temp root app! I wonder how the folks at arctablet got the dump. Can you do it without root in Linux then?
My netbook has Linux on it (xubuntu) so will try that.

            Right.

            lsusb recognises device, returns

            Bus 001 Device 005: ID 2207:290a

After a bit of fiddling I compiled rkflashtool and have copied the perl script in.
I execute it from terminal and get 'command not found'

Bit of a Linux newbie, is there a step I'm missing?

edit - using "sudo perl an10g2_dump.pl" worked - had to amend the script to use ./rkflashtool
Rom currently dumping and can upload if you send me details of where to put it.

I also managed to mount 'system.img'. all the files are dated '07/04/12' so looks like I've got the same version as AlleyTrotter.

Tested in capacitive 10bG2 no luck, don't boot. But I will work on it to run on our kernel, I hope that our kernel can move this system.

Mr. weelson, thanks for getting it done but if the date are the same no sense in spending a huge amount of time uploading the ROM. But I would like to see your kernel which is small and a easy upload.

I will PM you the FTP info.

                    Thanks Mr. Weeler!

Analysis shows you have the same exact ROM as Alley's.

Lets see what happens a few months from now

OK I dont think we have many 10b G3 users yet. So who wants to be my beta tester for the rooted ROM?

                            That'll be me then!
Is it just rooted or have you done any other funky stuff?

I flashed the Kasty rom which is running fine - only thing that isn't working is location services.
I also had to amend platform.xml and alter the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission and add
<group gid="media_rw" /> so that Titanium Backup would write to the physical SD card - ES File explorer had no problem.

I got deja vu writing that but can't find where else I've posted it!

It will be root + google play (injected by APP injector). I am not going to add face lock myself. That can be added if the user wants using Petrus APP Injector.
I also would like some help on what to debloat from the ROM? So if you can make a list of bloat that would help. Remember I cant boot it to really see whats there. I can only guess by looking at the files in /system/app

Another thing I would like to do is get calender sync working. Kasty does not have calendar app and most of them do not sync but I BELIEVE I found the file set to make that work. So as part of APP Injector I want to allow the user to insert calender if they want it. I will need that tested.

As for the SD card thing. You do know thats not really a bug but a decision that is being made moving Android forward to a new style of handling sdcard?

Have a look at posts #45 and on about this exact issue on the Nextbook ICS ROM. This might be a better fix.

As you can also see titanium will not be the only problem APP with the new sd card setup. Games and stuff that store data on sdcard, it will be using the internel sdcard unless you make that change or those old apps get updated to use the new setup.

However I am not sure I want to change anything here in a ROM! Android is trying to move away from the old style SDcard thing. Titanium backup I would think woulrd solve this with an update? If everyone keeps modding the setup back to the old sd card setup, sooner or later new apps are going to have an issue!
