    Yes and No

i figured out how to get the stock rom re-installed, but can't figure out how to open the backup image file to get at what i need....

But the bin4ry tool is only for the ICS rom, not sure what will happen if you use it on gingerbread. But if you are using Bobs 1.5 rom, it should already be rooted i do believe

Is it a standard image file which can be directly uploaded to the device? If so, I may be able to pull it apart and re-package it.

I have successfully rooted the R93 Gingerbread firmware, as well as added some tweaks found elsewhere on the web and gotten rid of much of the bloat. The tablet seems to breath easier now and is stable. The Play market works great as well. It doesn't boot considerably faster, but I can live with that. I am still looking at what else I can ditch / add to make a nice package for NEXT9P owners. If there's any interest in this, I can make it available once I am done playing.

I have James' ROM dump. He got backup.img which means it is a totally stock ROM. Just like it came from Nexbook! He did a good job with this so thank him!

I am uploading it now so you all have a stock ROM to work with.

              Netflix App Help

Thank you soooooo much to Finless for the ROM. It has greatly opened up all kinds of possibilities for me with this tablet. The only thing I can't seem to get to work is the Netflx app off of the Google Play Store. It says "Your device isn't compatible with this version". Any help with this?

                You guys are awesome

My son was given this NextBook 9p for his birthday recently, and as an Android phone user thought this would be a snap to get setup so he can do homework and whatever with it.

Not so much. (I didnt buy it). But this has really helped out. I only hope he forgives me for deleting his angry birds game and progress.

                Thanks again.

                  rooting the beast

                  Hi Everyone:

I am new to all this, and so I decided to start by rooting the machine and getting google play to work. I am following the tutorial by JamesCozzby:

Start by installing the adb driver for the Nextbook 9:
                  1. You can do this by plugging your Nextbook 9 into your computer using the cable that came with it.
                  2. Then on the nextbook 9, you want to make sure USB Debugging is enabled. You can do this by going to settings on the nextbook 9, then to development. Then make sure there is a check mark next to USB Debugging. (Windows might complain that it was un able to install the driver software. If so, you can close the windows that popup)
                  3. Next, on your computer download the file named "Nextbook 9 driver.zip" that can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?naz9jarl3u09aus
                  4. Once the download is completed, go to your downloads folder, and unzip the folder named "Nextbook 9 drivers"
                  5. Next, go to start, then type device manager.
                  6. Then click on device manger once it shows up.
7.0 Then it can be one of two options, once device manager loads:
7.1 If there is a device listed with an yellow triangle, right click on it and then go to properties, then go to details, and in the drop down menu select hardware Ids, and check to see if it lists "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&REV_0222&MI_01" and "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&&MI_01", if not, check to see if there is another device with a yellow tringle, and check it. If none of these match then go to step 7.2:
7.2 If you do not find your device listed with a yellow trianlge, then it has been installed as a Universial serial bus controller. Click on "Universal Serial Bus Controller" to open the devices installed in that category, and scroll to "USB Composite Devices" If there is more than one, then you have to right click on each one and go to properties, then go to details, then in drop down menu, select Hardware Ids, and find the one that lists "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&REV_0222&MI_01" and "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&&MI_01" as its hardware id.
                  7. Now, once you have found your device in the device manager, you want to right click on it, and choose to "update driver software" then choose "browse my computer for driver software"
                  8. Then click on the browse button and navigate to where you unzipped the folder called "Nextbook 9 driver" (probably in your downloads folder if you did not change it), and select the unzipped folder called "Nextbook 9 driver" then press ok.
                  9. Now press next, and the driver software should install. Windows will warn you that it cannot verify the publisher of this software. Choose to "Install anyway" (I only updated the setup information, i did not create the software. I obtained this software from a post by domrad through this this website. i downloaded the software from this link: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...sing-ADB-guide )
                  10. If it does not install, start from step 1 again.

Now you need to root your Nextbook 9:
                  1. In order to root this tablet, you need to download a one step tool called "Bin4ry" yo your computer, use this link to do so: http://uploaded.net/file/h44f6vni once the page is loaded, click on the free download button, and wait for the timer to count down. then type in the capatcha, and the download should begin.
                  2. Once you have finished downloading, go to your downloads folder and unzip the folder named "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15".
                  3. Make sure your nextbook 9 is still plugged into the computer (or plug it in now), and go to the settings on the nextbook 9, then go to storage, and in the upper right corner click the menu button, then click USB Computer Connection.
                  4. Now on your computer, open the unzipped "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15" folder, and double click the file called RunMe
                  5. It will open a new window (a type of command prompt)
                  6. Now type 1 and press enter.
                  7. Now follow the instructions it will give you (such as "unlock device and press restore" or something like that, it does not get difficult, and should only take 2-5 minutes to complete. And as a warning, when it tells you to press restore on your device, all it is doing is resetting some of your settings, for example your wallpaper. It does not reset anything such as saved accounts, wifi setting, sound settings, etc. and it does not remove any applications. Also, it will reboot your device atleast twice, so do not try to do it yourself when it says "rebooting device", just wait and it will complete).
                  8. When the program is done and your nextbook 9 is fully rebooted, you can close the bin4ry window.
First, I tried to get the drivers loaded on my wife's Window's 7 machine (I am a linux guy from way back and know nothing about windows - so be warned). The device manager kept trying to mount it as an external disk (or something like that) and I could not install the drivers.

So, based on something someone said in this thread, I tried it on an old Vista machine. And that seemed to work. The device manager saw something called 'Next9P' and allowed me to install the new drivers. So, I thought I was in business. I download Bin4ry and ran RunMe. Here is what it did

                  ================================================== ====================
= This script will root your Android phone with adb restore function =
= Script by Bin4ry (thanks to Goroh_kun and tkymgr for the idea) =

                  ================================================== ====================

                  Device type:
                  1) Normal
                  2) Special (for example: Sony Tablet S, Medion Lifetab)

                  x) Unroot

                  Make a choice: 1
Checking if i should run in Normal Mode or special Sony Mode
Please connect your device with USB-Debugging enabled now
                  * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
                  * daemon started successfully *
But them it just hung. Nothing else happened. After I installed the new drivers, Windows complained that I might need to reboot. So, I restarted the windows machine. This time when I plug the tablet in, it found the correct drivers I think, saying it was using "%ADB_INTERFACE". However, RunMe did exactly the same thing.

                  Any ideas?

BTW: The tablet was in USB debug mode. Also, I has the "USB computer connection" set. One question I have is that this setting give three choices: MTP, PTP, and Mass Storage. The default is Mass Storage and I left it that way. Is that correct?

                    Try again on windows 7

Lets give windows 7 a try again.

On your windows 7 machine, it is being installed as a "Universal Serial Bus Controller" In order to install it on your windows 7 machine, you need to open device manager, and then open the category "Universal Serial Bus Controller" then you should see one or more "USB Composite Device" listed. Check each one for the matching hardware Id's and if you find it, right click on it and choose to update driver, and then browse to where you unzipped the Nextbook 9 driver. Click next and it should install.

Now try bin4ry and see if it works now (and you have to make sure to enable usb connection in the storage settings on the tablet everytime you try to run bin4ry. And yes "Mass Storage Mode" is the mode you want it on).

If you need anymore help, Feel free to ask.

                    James

Thanks for the quick reply James. Let me give you more info on what happens on the Windows 7 machine. As you said, when I plug the tablet in it creates a "USB Composite Device". I can unplug and replug the tablet while the device manager is running and watch this new device come and go. The new device has ids of "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000&REV_0222" and "USB\VID_2207&PID_0000", which is not exactly what you said it should be. They are missing the " &MI_01" at the end. I don't know if that matters. When I try updating the driver, it does what you said, allowing me to point to the driver on disk, but then when I hit Next it says "Windows has determined that the driver software for your device in up to date".

This sounds exactly like what I experienced. My solution was post # 12 of http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...as-of-Nov-2012

I had no adb_usb.ini file on my computer, so even with the right driver, adb couldn't see the device. Search the hard drive of your pc for a .android folder and see if you have this ini file in that folder. If you do, just add the text "0x2207" (without the quotes) to the file. If you don't, just make a text file with "0x2207" and nothing else in it and name it "adb_usb.ini". Then give it a try again.

Yes, JackTheBear is right. On your vista machine, you need to find the file that he mentioned and open it as a text document, and add what he said

                            Good job JackTheBear

Yep. That worked. For the record, I needed to install the SDK tools, which were lgiven as optional above, in order to get the .android directory. Everything worked after that.

The link to "Play For Nextbook 9.zip" given above did not work for me. I found it at http://www.mediafire.com/?at464o0s985ucp4
