Arnova 9G2 Finless Bob's "GingerComb" Custom ROM Version 2.1 CWM Release

UPDATE July 10, 2012

I have updated this ROM based on feedback and bugs found;

This is still my 2.1 ROM but the new ROM is 2.1a. It has the following fixes in it:
1) System space has been increased from 240mb to 300mb. This is because the standard APP Injector package would not fit on /system.
2) WPA_supplicant was updated to support ADHOC network connections.

The download link below has been updated so the file name is 2.1a.

That is all. If you do not need more system space or adhoc wifi, then there is no reason to update to this ROM.
However with that said, you CAN update and use a backup in CWM to do a "advanced" restore of the data and cache areas. Thus you should not loose all your APPS, etc.

If you want to try this approach, do not erase IDB and only flash system.img. If the system does not work right... well sorry. Just do a full reflash and erase IDB. I cannot test every scenario of apps installed. But again I do believe you can flash system.img alone and still be OK.

OK folks, with the success of my "GingerComb" ROM for the Arnova 10G2, by popular vote the next Arnova tablet to get this ROM is the 9G2.

To stop confusion now, THIS IS NOT ICS! It is a GingerBread Kernel with a Honeycomb system! However, you 9G2 people that upgraded to the 9G3 ICS ROM, you might want to give this ROM a go! In my opinion with 512KB RAM, it vastly out performs ICS.

I feel really good about this port even though I do not have a 9G2 and cannot fully test it. Using my 10G2 kernel it boots and everything seems to work. Additionally the scripts I wrote to make this ROM worked 100% flawless on the 9G2! So thats good news. It means other than the kernel, the ROMs are almost identical!
I think this should work just as good as it does for the 10G2!

PLEASE READ the README.TXT for instructions and what this ROM is about!

REMEMBER! Just like most my ROMs that have major changes to it, ERASE IDB and FLASH THE LOADER! Do this before reporting any problems! You can have screwy things happen if you do NOT erase IDB. Loader is also very important!

Now this is a BETA TEST ROM 2! I cannot fully test everything! So you are CRASH TEST DUMMY'S

When reporting problems please try to be as detailed as possible! If there is no detail to your problem and the steps you took to make the issue happen, I cannot help much. So to help make this ROM better for everyone, please be a good tester and document the issue as best you can!

Also those that know how to use ADB or pull the logcat file, this will help a lot! So if you know how to do this when testing, please supply a logcat dump.

So you know this is not my 2.1 ROM! It is a 2.0 BETA ROM!
1) It is NOT debloated
2) It has older Google Files which can be updated by the Google Play store
3) It does not have ClockWork Mod
4) etc..... It was made for BETA testing and I did not want to make too many changes for the test.

Finally after testing and any fixes needed, I will update the ROM to what I call V2.1
It will be debloated
It will have ClockWork mod
It will have App Injector to put back stuff
It will have all the latest Google files and APPs.

Seems perfect so far

Been playing with the new beta for about 45 mins now and everything seems perfect!
Signed straight into google, play store updated and works perfect, browser is working as it should.

Any problems come up I'll update =]

When I did the 10G2 the most things people had problems with after the basics were fixed, was games!

Most games that would never run on the 10G2 now work on my Gingercomb
I am hoping this is true with the 9G2 as well!
But it also broke some games that did work. I eventually fixed that to the best possible.
So if your a gamer, let me know how that goes.

This speed up graphics and game play. It would NOT WORK on any Arnova before but it does work on the 10G2 GingerComb and I am expecting it to work on the 9G2 as well once I updated the EGL drivers.

So if you can, please go to the market and install ChainFire 3D.

Hi again Bob. Sorry for the wait. Chainfire 3d installed flawlessly and all plugins installed.
Tried Angry Birds (I know terrible test) and Temple Run, both worked great on the Nvidia plugin.

Any other games you would recommend to stress test it?

Right, tested a number of games and these are what I got from them:
Angry Birds: Stutters at menu and sometimes pauses for a slight second in game. Changing Chainfire settings cured this.

Assassins Creed - Altaïr's Chronicles: Cropped menus (image seems to be pushed down the screen leaving a huge black border at top) and in game 3d graphics are white making people look like ghosts. Couldn't seem to fix this with varied chainfire settings.

Asphalt 6: Says not supported.

Canabalt HD: Has a couple of graphic glitches in HD mode, but runs very smoothly.

Dead Space: Working smoothly with Qualcomm and reduced texture quality.

Duke Nukem 3D: PERFECT.

Dungeon Hunter: Has the weird pushed down screen thing that AC had on the menu, but in-game is perfect.

Frontline Commando: PERFECT.

Fruit Ninja (Original): PERFECT.

Fruit Ninja THD: Gets through Openfaint fine then crashes to desktop. Couldn't get it working with any settings or plugins.

Minecraft Portable Edition: PERFECT. Even with fancy graphics.

Rebuild: PERFECT.

Riptide GP: PERFECT. (Surprised me tbh)

Shadowgun: Working with Qualcomm/PowerVR and reduced texture quality.

Sonic CD: PERFECT.

Sprinkle: Gets to menu and after selecting new game, returns to desktop.

Temple Run: PERFECT.


That's it so far. Any other games I try out I will let you know the results Bob. =]

Yea they pretty much had those problems on both 1.5 and ICS. No idea about stock.

But it seems some games are working better now. Never had any luck with Riptide GP, I used to have to run Minecraft with fancy graphics off, and had slight lag in Frontline Commando and Fruit Ninja.

Just tested two more games as well, Delver and Zombie Smash, both working perfectly.

Also when looking at games on the Play Market, I'm seeing more apps than usual. Very impressed with this ROM. =]

Sorry for double posting, just wanted to say tested out some more Tegra games, bit hit and miss but a lot more compatibility being seen. (Guerrilla Joe, Dungeon Defenders Second Wave working, Mass Effect Infiltrator, Heroes Call and Siegecraft THD not so much.)

All in all, games wise, the ROM seems to have achieved more than i've seen previously compatibility wise and all the other apps i've tried (Facebook, Opera, Battlenet authenticator, Titanium Backup...) all work with no problems.

SD card works fine, no issues with WIFI, videos perfect. No random restarts. Seems all good sir.

Can't wait to test out CWM when you finalize it. =]

Cool...... Seems the ROM is working well
I am surprised there aren't more people testing it.

I will add the CWM part tomorrow for testing of that and hopefully 2.1 will be completed!
