Bought a cheap MX2 box on AliExpress and managed to install OpenElec 4.97.3. Newer versions 4.2.1 and 5.0.3 made the box freeze during start up, so there was not much hope for the new version 6.0.0.
I could not find any update folder in the previous installation so I installed fresh from zip file on a MX2 box with the toothpic methode and it works perfect! Now running Kodi 15.2 instead of 14.1.
Thank you very much for all the good work.

I think its better to ask BEFORE buy something
Can you guys please recommend a box that is known to be stable and working trouble-free with openelec? I dont care about extreme things, i dont care about 4K, i dont care about 5.1/7.1, i only care about best possible stability.
PS If i could pay 120+ euros, i know some good options LOL - i am asking for cheap solutions that are known to be working OK ...Thanks

Load back Android for you M8, ( hoping you have the flash); Now put a bluetooth mouse or keyboard dongle into one of the USB port then without SDCard in the slot, toothpick into the box and boot. The box will go into recovery mode, scroll to wipe-flash let it do a clean wipe, then choose wipe-cache, now do not reboot, insert the SDCard into the slot with the OE update file you want to load on the box, then select update.ext. Let it load OE. This should get OE to load. The reason you use a bluetooth mouse or keyboard is the remote will not work in recovery mode on some M8, for you to make selections. Post your reply.
I had already previously tested to see if I could get it into recovery mode. When there is no sd card in the box, and I use the toothpick I see it attempt to get into a recovery mode but it acts like it times out by not detecting an sdcard and at the bottom of the screen it says Rebooting and it reboots within 30 seconds. I never receive a menu on the screen with different recovery options to pick from.

    Thanks.
I figured when you said it needed it, that there probably isn't one. It's a pity, but not a big deal.

    Thank again.

My box still works brilliantly on 5.0.3 so I can't make my mind up whether to upgrade or not.
Most likely will be relased just after mainline OE 6.0.1 will be released (at the beginning of the January).
