Arnova 10 G2 Custom ROM by Finless V1.4 available!

Hi Finless - great ROM BTW. I just wanted to share my sorry-ass tale. Having followed all the instructions and successfully flashed the ROM, I encountered a major snag - no sound! No matter how many reboots I did, I couldn't fix the problem.<br />

I then realised that I had the power cable in the headphone connector!

hehe - happened to me too - the first time i had to charge!
the damn light wont turn on...im thinking - that thing was just working and now its dead?
let me check that cable - maybe its not fully in... so im pushing... nothing... lets see if it makes any contact... pull out... a headphone whole is staring at me whaat? that thing is supposed to charge from there?
checking the manual... aah - theres another whole on the other side...

Ummmm it was a long road. Back in the mid 80's I was a programmer with many languages under my belt. But I stopped like in 1989 or something like that. Anyway I knew nothing about Android OS, ROMS, nor had I touched Linux EVER! I did know early Unix of course.

Bottom line I got my Arnova 10 G2 tablet later November. Having Jailbroken my iPod before I wanted to know how to jailbreak the tablet. Started from scratch and first thing I learned is its not called jailbreaking but rooting. So started searching the web and found xda, and all kinds of other places. Tried some of the rooting tools and none of them worked on this tablet. Then after a few days of studying I realized no one had fully rooted many of the new RK29 tablets out there. So I studied and studied 1000's of posts about rooting. GOD it was hard as many posts in XDA had mostly junk with people begging to do this or that etc. I stumbled on a post by Wendal that talked about rooting. The first root system was still cramfs. So I studied what that was, what yaffs was, ext3, etc etc. And basically just learned it. Then I went at the Arnova to get it ext3 and seriously after 2 weeks of trying and ALMOST giving up, I got it... That damn parameter file!!!

So again bottom line. I learned it all on the web starting late November!

No I am learning more linux, etc. People ask me to make kernel's and stuff and HA! At this point I couldn’t compile a kernel if I tried. But I have found sites that talk about it so I am sure when the time comes I will do it. Same for making APK apps. I kinda want to get into that too.

Anyway so there is my story and I am sticking to it

Same here. Was heading out of town for business trip when tablet arrived. Called home and asked the Mrs. to open the box and charge the unit so I'd be able to set it up on the airplane ride. She plugged it into the easiest port to see....the sound port. I got home, grabbed the tablet and headed out. Tried to turn it on and, of course, no power.

I was unsure about rooting as ive never played with android and tablets before but by god Bob, you made it so simple to do and the readme file was SPOT ON.. i did have problems with the market but reading the above and deleting the files sorted it out.

The tablet is actually for my mother-in-law in hospital (its her birthday present and i got the job to sort it out lol) i was wondering is there any way to change the boot logo/image, i personally dont mind it but i would prefer to install a toned down one so they dont know i have fiddled with the software lol by all means still keep the credits on there because you guys work damn hard to bring us the best we can get out of these machines.. and you certainly do that

if the above is a pain in the arse to do ill leave it and have to explain

I have also used your transparent mod and that as well is just PERFECT...

I appreciate your reply, is there anything special about the image, is it just a flat image or a GIF? (i can find my way around photoshop/paint.net OK but depends on what the image needs to be.. I hate troubling you guys because you do so much already for free.

Another approach is simply to delete the boot animation. The splash screen only appears for a few moments, then the boot animation takes over. I'm hoping to work on a tamer boot animation over the next week or so. If I get it together and Bob's okay with it, I'll make it available here.

You guys are always free to change the bootanimation. Thats wide open. No need to check with me on the boot animation.

Chris if you want to remove the longer displayed boot animation, just go download ES FIle Explorer from the market. Then navigate to /system/media and delete the bootanimation.zip

I have tried something that didn't work... (im very new to firmware, etc but having a bash)

I deleted the boot animation and now for a couple of seconds i still get the boot image that Damo created but no animation just the Arnova..

I thought i would try something and take the boot animation zip and make my own PNG files (both the same so no animation but thought i would keep the file paths the same) but it didnt load, i assume there is something a bit more within the firmware..

Any help would be appreciated

The boot animation must be zip aligned for the zip to work!
You can't just zip it in windows.

Hi Finless, Whoops sorry, I've replied to the wrong post. Its the custom ROM I've flashed my 10 G2 with, as I said, everything works well, it boots up faster. I was nervous at first, as my 10 G2 is only two days old, but I followed your instructions to the letter, "Market" works too, now downloading apps. had to re-install Angry Birds, now playing again, brilliant. Thanks to you, and your hard work.

Glad it all worked for you Robsta!

See if your tablet updates to the new Market that just came out yesterday. The Market is now called Google Play. Some are saying it updates automatically.

Hi Finless,

Just a note to say excellent rom. I've flashed this after running the rom off the other site for some time. I found the tab so slow with that rom that it was unusable. I've flashed to your rom and the difference is night and day.

Any future plans for this device?

Just a note to other users. you should use the battery calibration app when you get a chance. I had terrible battery life even with the old rom. Charged my device to 100%, claibrated it and let it run down completely. I get hours out of it now.
