I am probably going to sound stupid here but when you guys say ROM and Kernel are they one in the same thing? Reason I am confused is I see people talking about for example "I have Finless 1.7 and the 2dark4u kernel". Are they saying they have installed the Finless ROM and subsequently installed a different kernel.

If that being the case how do you install a different kernel on a custom ROM

Told you it was going to be stupid

      Hi
As ROM - (i.e FInless 1.7) is refered to complete package including kernel an apps.
kernel - is only part of system ( comparision to engine (kernel ) in the car (ROM) ) Hope you understood this

You can use Finless ROM Flash Tool to flash kernel only - see checkboxes. Just rename your desired kernel and flash it with that tool.

Once i get it up and running or when i flash back to Finless MX1/2 with 2dark4u kernel i'll let you know.

BTW doesn't a MK808 kernel work on your devices? Without WIFI maybe, but atleast you can runsome tests from SD-card or external-HD. Or use a WIFI dingle or USB to ethernet adapter.

I have a UG007II so when i use the UG802 kernel i loose WIFI too, i'm using an USB WIFI dongle at the moment. (Custom UG007(II) kernel is in the make)

        EDIT:
Oke, seems like i cant get those Minix hybrids to work on my UG007II. So i flashed back.
        I'm getting 62FPS using 2dark4u 1080p OC kernel (GPU 466mhz, CPU 1.6ghz)
        That's quiet an improvement.

The mk808 kernels do work, with the a loss of wifi and bluetooth. Considering my main input is via wifi remotes, and after all the flashing/re flashing I have done I thought it was best just to enjoy it, as most of my spare time has been toying.

I have ordered a cheap usb to ethernet, and usb wifi dongle. I will probably only reach around 1meg per second, but considering I would need roughly videos around 7500kbps to max out the speed, yet none of my videos come anywhere near that, it should be more than sufficient.

Are you aware you can just flash the kernel? So for instance you can copy a video file to your internal storage or SD via WIFI. Flash the kernel, run the test (see what your MK808b can do with a faster GPU(and CPU)) and just flash back again. No need to reconfigure or install your apps again. I flash the kernel using CWM recovery, but using the windows flash tool will work too (just deselect everything else).
I have the different kernels on my SD card and i just enter CWM recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and flash the kernel from SD. Takes less then a minute. If im correct even flashing between 720p and 1080p kernel this way will work.
          - UG007-II with Finless iMito MX1/2 1.7a ROM and UG802 2Dark4U 1080p overclock kernel and USB WIFI dongle.
          - MK808 with Finless MK808 1.7c ROM and 2Dark4U 1.4 MK808 1080p overclock kernel.

I am aware indeed, but like I said, I have been toying with the device ever since I bought it, and for the first time currently happy with it despite being 720p. I will probably feel the desire to test it out again, but probably at the weekend when I get my accessories. It would also be great if Bob can get this ethernet as default fix out, as I probably would sacrifice built in wifi/bluetooth for 1080p currently. I am also curious to see if taking the libstagefright.so from the hybrid firmware and using it on finless would solve the video corruption problem.

I would be more inclined to do it, but since you already have I am sure the performance will be similar to your device. I could re-encode a video clip, and hook up a mouse and test in the time being, but I know seeing it in glorious 60fps 1080p will make it very hard to go back to 720p, so will wait until it's viable to actually be able to stay on 1080p.

Perfect analogy and what I thought.

So is that what people have been doing then. They used Finless Bob rom and then installed the 2dark4u kernel?

I take it you can gain alot on a different kernel?

Sorry to jump in here. How do you transfer your files remotely ? I have my mk808 strapped to the back of the TV and would like to avoid taking it off the wall to get access to SD cards.

Also you mention CWM does that work on the finless ROM? I checked the market and it has a version for the 802

                  @IDIDMYTIME

Should you add to your XBMC comment at the start what ROM etc you are on as I suppose these could be a factor in the pros and cons ..... probably same can be said for the rest i.e. "PLEASE NOTE MY COMMENTS PRIMARILY ARE WHILE USING ROM"

Also maybe your opinion on Kernels and links to them ?

Great post and worthy of a sticky imho. Invaluable in getting people up to speed ASAP. I like following a well trodden path with clear signage of what to do and where to go and maybe a nice pretty and scantily clad guide (female for me please) to hold my hand !

                  Cheers

As mentioned in the first question, the Minix hybrid is a must if you want to use XBMC, and is currently what I am using. I would recommend that over any current rom unless you need specific things from the 4.2.2 rom which I have listed.

I have not tried any kernels yet, purely due to the mk808b not being able to run any, hence why no kernel questions. This will be added in time if the mk808b gets custom kernels, or when I play around flashing mk808 kernels to my mk808b.

If you're looking for a way to wifi files over, MyPhoneExplorer is an excellent piece of software if you're using Windows. You can transfer files over wifi or bluetooth, and can make it auto boot and run as a service, so can transfer files at any point. You will need to download the PC software, and the client in the Google Play store.

Edit: For CWM see this thread by leolas here

hi m8 thanks for the response. The reason I suggest the clarification/disclaimer is because all the other niggles may or may not be particular to a given ROM? dunno tbh.

Another point is the link you use for the finless bob rom. Not sure if its bobs thread needs to be corrected or its the wrong link but:

"This is ONLY for the Original MK808. It is not for the MK808B or any clones like the Sunvel."

Writting up on the niggles of each rom is pretty time consuming, they all work fine, but the rom I mentioned is based on a very polished rom and is the newest out of everything released.

Nope, that was my mistake, linked the wrong forum thread. I will correct and mention that its for the original only. Not too sure on the number of people who actually have a 'fake' mk808b though, I have not seen a whole bunch of posts about them.

Please dont think I was asking you to write up all the specifics related to each that was not my intention. It is simply a guiding statement so the reader doesnt get confused. A generic "this may or may not manifest on your particular ROM etc." .... probably just me being anal tbh.

I actually thought I had fake but looks like its an original afterall. Will need to post my pics up on the other thread to 100% confirm though. It all gets very confusing with the chinese market.

Now sitting down and getting ready to install the other ROM on my other MK808b .... will be interesting to see if wifi etc improves if it can without hardware changes I suppose.

It's not that, it's just there really isn't a great deal of difference, in useability or atheistic. Nothing is inherently broken apart from the SD video corruption which has been highlighted. Both come with apps I really wish it didn't and end up deleting using Titanium Backup. (hate android tuner, and the 'stock' launcher, which not only looks ugly, but is not customizable and leaves ugly icons).

The Hybrid rom is newer, and has some fixes which help, most of which are under the hood and you won't notice.

Realistically, the only way you may have a problem is if you're trying to run webcams, or dongles, as one rom may have support, but another wont. Hybrid has much better support for usb accessories, but the stock rom Bob based for 1.7 may work with something that doesn't in another.

Considerably more than I was getting on 1.7 at 1080p.
