There are a lot of different devices out there using this chipset and you can't really judge them just by the chipset.
I seriously doubt it. Take a look at Lewy's Custom Rom for the K-R42. 1080p works perfectly and there haven't been any complaints about it for weeks. The Minix X7 has also perfect 1080p playback by now.

Was going to replace my dead MK808B with a RK3188 device, but in the end decided to buy a HP N40L microserver with GT610 low profile graphics card. This worked out to around $120.00 (based on current exchange rate). So for the price of a X7 I have a fully fledged windows/Linux pc that is well supported and consumes minimal power. Obviously it is substantially bigger than an Andriod TV stick but it is still small enough to hide in a corner somewhere. This will be used with a BT remote that I got with my MK808B.MK808B|D-Link Powered USB Hub|Looking for working USB to Ethernet adaptor...

As I have already wrote today in other posting, I will better wait for the launch of the MINIX's new miniPC line based on Intel's BAY TRAIL processors which will be able to run windows 8.1 + Android, will have 4,5W-10W power consumption (depending on model) but will have 3x performance (I saw the antutu scores) and will be able to use x86 applications together with android ones;
video performance is not as good as the Tegra4 but is waay beyond mali450 or PowerVR SGX544MP3 GPU, not to speak of the ancient mali400 present in all these low-end sticks... and btw, I am happy that I got rid of my RK3188 based device containing that malefic mali400 which I don't want to ever hear about it again
Asus Transformer Book T100 features Bay Trail CPU
I am very happy with the existence of I2S stream for audio out so I'll be able to use my preferred high end ES9018 DAC (after isolation and reclocking) for high resolution (32bit 384khz) audio content, making a valuable media center out of this
and the new miniPC planned to get released Q1 2014 with MSRP of only 139$

"All signs point to Intel’s new Bay Trail chips being more Linux-friendly than any Atom processors we’ve seen in the last few years, thanks largely to a move from Imagination’s PowerVR graphics to Intel’s own Intel HD graphics."
"The first benchmarks of Intel’s upcoming Bay Trail SoC have appeared online — and it’s good news for x86 fans, but terrible news for ARM: Bay Trail-T, clocked at just 1.1GHz, is around 30% faster than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz, the fastest ARM chip on the market. This data comes from an Antutu benchmark, which shows a device with the code name byt_t_ffrd10 — Bay Trail-T Form Factor Reference Device — racking up the magnificent score of 43,416. This is apparently at 1.1GHz, while running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean"

It looks like my next tvbox will be ''atm7039" based..
It supports 'hevc/h.265" it seems
I realy dislike 'Intel' made atom boards.. (short life cycle.. always came with a hardware limit -ram -video -res or cpu)
Most boards broke down with-in a year..
vs
Those from 'max sun" that still work (3y nonstop)
Also i tried.. x86 android.. no g-market / app support (really disapointing)
-anyway.. time will tell... if Intel can retrieve the marked.. it lost from ArmDevices

the link is working corectly on my side, the title of the product is
Ainol Novo 9 Spark RAM 2GB 9.7 Inch Retina Screen 4K Video Dual Camera Blue
which has mini HDMI, mini USB, 16gb nand, 4k ultraHD compatible and has a hi-rez 2000px IPS touch screen; there are only tablets for now with this chipset so let's hope maybe there will be also some tv dongles; anyway the future is bright and holds for us a lot of competitive new products using different chipsets which will rival on the market begining this winter

I can quite understand the frustration with Rockchip, especially as the products are so often advertised as being fully compatible with this and that, only to find that they aren't.
Rockchip will likely end up shooting themselves in the foot because by reputation. they will lose buyers and with others catching up, they may be forced into a rethink and start releasing code sooner and putting more effort into producing great stock ROM's.
The Amlogic M8 will shake things up in the market somewhat.
Some of the big buyers such as Geekbuying might also consider giving more support to other chips to help make the point.
I guess that if Rockchip produce their products at the best bang per buck for the market then there will likely always be some buyers.
I hope that Strauzo can release the information that he has as it will benefit everybody, although I quite understand the reasons behind him not wanting to do so.

it's a game
Rockchip rk3188 in the beginning market for hdmi dongles and mini pc powerfull still in this area quick good cpu for browsing internet . about to the gpu mali still lacking in performance to true hd.
Allwinner A31 cpu lacks in performance, true power efficiency (thats why tablet makers choose)and pretty good GPU and mostly this A31 its used for tablet makers.
But to me its suppose to be the reverse
Rk3188 for tablet makers
A31 for hdmi stick and mini pc but the manufacturer in those market still far behind in the OS version, the contrary for tablet makers and rock chip its doing OK for both.
We already knows that amlogic new cpu its going to be good and even with latest version of android.
And we dont know how its going to be the new allwinner A80 big little I think the work processes are going to be simultaneously different for Samsung and mtk, others for me understanding to make the different for later this year just announced and the Onda tablet with this chip set.for GPU I hope they pushing for power vr but I don't know they can do it in this big little CPU
Rockchip with this new big little CPU and GPU we don't know nothing but they have a lot of experience.

Got my Huawei MediaQ M310 today. First impression "Wow" A lot of features in a tiny box. XBMC plays smooth. Wifi rock solid. Cell phone remote with share is cool. Havent even tried the 3D games yet but I'm impressed.
