Just asking about a5x because latest mecool's have L1 and i need to decide which one to buy.
Mecool is Amlogic, A5X Max is Rockchip.
No Rockchip manufacturer has gotten a Widevine license yet.
There is only one company currently waiting for a license.

Hello, I'm considering to get this unit: "A5X MAX PLUS RK3328 4GB RAM 32GB ROM Android 7.1 5.0G WIFI 1000M LAN Bluetooth HDR 10 USB 3.0 TV Box - EU"

I already use a box with 2/16gb, s905x with libreelec on sd card. That box is quite stable but I have problems with 4k h264 movies, and lack of proper connections (no usb 3.0, no gigabit ethernet, weak wi-fi, no802.11ac) is torturing me when I try to watch 4k movies over 40gb. I don't stream, neither from legal or illegal websites nor kodi. I only need a box to watch 4k hdr10 video files which are already on my usb 3.0 external HDD or my SMB server in my LAN.

Can this box handle my needs?

This box definitely doesn't support any HDR in Android or LibreELEC.
4K videos play downscaled to 720p.
I would say the S905x you have will already play miles better than this.

Well, thats quite a shock for me. I heard RK3399 does not have HDR but RK3368 was advertised with 4k h264/h265 and HDR10/HLG support. On paper, the box looked rock solid option for me. I'm glad that I asked before buying it.

-What I liked about it was "USB 3.0 support, gigabit lan, 802.11ac, dualband wi-fi,4gb ram". The only thing I'd ask for this box was optical audio out instead of spdif.

I don't want to drift away from the title but what is the reason for that trick (720p downnscale)? Is that a software thing which might be solved in future, or hardware limitation?

In which Chipset/CPU can I trust for 4k hdr videos? (I'm talking about 2 hour videos around 40-80GB file sizes)

RK3399 supports HDR too but you need LibreELEC, very few devices supported.
                    Odroid-N1, Rock960, Rockpro64, Sapphire, UT5, HPH NT-V9

Half of advertised features on paper are false or don't work at all, never believe flashy advertisements.
Downscaled means it will look worse on a 4K tv, on a FHD tv you won't notice since all 4K content needs to be downscaled to show 1080p.
With downscaled, HDR videos will also play with washed out colors and look worse than non HDR videos.
It's all software related and A5x RK3328 has zero software support so it will never be fixed.

                    RK3328 supports only 3840x2160 x 24, 25 or 30hz not 3840x2160 x 50 or 60hz HDR in Android*maybe only in Oreo firmware).
In LibreELEC, it supports full 3840x2160 x 24, 25, 30, 50, 60hz HDR but your tv, cables and avr equipment all need to support it.
Multichannel sound is still work in progress in LibreELEC.
Rock64, Rockbox, ROC CC, Bqeel MVR9 RK3328(First 2 don't support HDR in Android Kodi, but all 4 support LibreELEC or actual 4K resolution in Android).

Check if this video plays right

Then set your Android resolution to 720p@60hz and also play the video in Kodi, MXPlayer.
The screen has to flicker for 2 seconds to change the video frame-buffer to 4K, if it's not happening, it plays downscaled to 720p.

So it plays completely wrong then.
Video must play at 3840x2160@25hz not 60hz for this video in all circumstances doesn't matter what resolution Android is set at and your tv must also show it.
Otherwise you will experience a lot of stuttering and audio out of sync on a 4K tv.
23.976fps video will play very badly and have lots of stuttering in such a case.
