I believe google talk is allready installed. Look for the icon that has talk written on it

No...it's not in the Shawn's ICS release. I have not installed the full market fix. Would doing this allow me to install Talk?

The market fix script actually automatically installs Google Talk, Voice search etc. for you when the script runs.

Can you point me to the latest consolidated directions for the Market Fix? I know there was a screen resolution and Calendar sync issue at some point.

I left my screen protector on too. I just took the tab off it like some other folks did. I want to protect it and not take a chance of it getting messed up.

              sd card problem.. help?!

i got a Sandisk micro 16 gb sd card, and when I try to use it, it says it is a damaged card.. formatting on the tablet doesn't fix the problem either. I was sent another card, and it says same thing!? sd card does not go down flush in reader, but seems to click in. Any ideas on what the issue might be or how to fix it? I am going to have the cards checked to see if they are ok, but what are the odds I'd get 2 bad ones?!
              Any ideas would be appreciated!

**UPDATE.. Fixed.. card had to be pushed down hard to get it to click in correctly!

I've had the same problem with mine. The problem is that there is a spring loaded catch inside the sd card slot that is not catching or isnt releasing. If you look at the sd card there is a little notch on one side. I got mine to work by fliping the sd card around and used it to force the catch.

                  clarify please

Forgive my ignorance, but to recap root on pmid 701c I have some questions.

Persistent root will require a flashed rom?

                  Stock ICS upgrade is prerooted?

Is Changing rw in /system to install apps requiring root advisable if a power-off reboot reverts to semiroot?

Deleting bloatware in /system/preinstall will not bork system restore?

                  Thx.

Mine is on the way and I need help!

*a version of this was PM'ed to N4RPS but there has been no reponse thus far... maybe someone else can help!*

Hello! I have just ordered my first ever tablet. my tablet experience is entirely incidental; some friends let me browse some stuff on their ipad and I used an ipad display at a museum once, but otherwise I am a n00b when it comes to tablets - my years of windows scholarship are useless! I had to look up what "long press" means!
Anyhow, the tablet I ordered is a Polaroid PMID701c. I saw N4RPS's very detailed instructions on how to root and enable/install Google Play on the device. The device has not arrived yet in the mail, and I am trying to fully understand, with my limited tablet knowledge and without the device in-hand, what I will have to do when I get it. I had a couple of questions. Thank you in advance for your patience.

First off, does N4RPS's method completely root the device, i.e. unlock SuperUser, or will I have to run superoneclick afterwards? CAN i even run superoneclick afterwards? Should I run it *beforehand*? is it possible to have rooted the device fully without the superuser thing? does this question even make sense?

"download [the google apps package], extract it to a folder, and copy that folder to the SD card"
do I do this via the USB link with the microSD card in the device, or should I do it with an SD-to-microSD adapter on my laptop, and THEN insert the microSD card? does it make a difference?

"download the PAID version of root explorer and install it on the tablet."
presumably this means through amazon app store - but I did notice there was a link to get what is supposedly the paid version without paying. I'll probably just end up paying, but I wanted to know, does installing the version from that link require a utility like Android Injector or Wondershare MobileGo? I assume it does, but again, I am a n00b to this world.

"Open the rootexplorer app... navigate to [the right apk] and install"
I assume this means that rootexplorer will allow me to install apk files on the fly -- please correct me if that is not true -- and am I also correct in assuming that I will have to enable non-market apps for this to work? and how exactly do I do that?

"navigate to /system/app folder... change from RO to RW"
when artistlogic restated this, he seemingly referred to marking the entirety of /system to RW, not just /system/app -- is this correct? can you clarify this step please. I don't want to make a mistake.

                    here's my biggest confusion.
"long press vending.apk and select permissions from the pop up menu... change permissions to match all other apps in this folder (rw-r--r--)"
I can't even begin to understand that last part. can you please clarify what I need to do here?

Finally, I had a question about the phone.apk issue. It seems like the thing to do is use root explorer to change its name. but then the poster said you need to do a reset on the back of the device. does this undo the changes i will have made in the earlier steps? is there another way to disable the unnecessary phone.apk nonsense?

Thank you all for your guidance!

                      Hello!

My procedure was developed when the tablet was first released, as a result of earlier procedures being very difficult to implement.

Since then, LiquidLimez has developed a script that does it all automatically. Therefore, the way I developed to add Play Store is now obsolete, and is no longer recommended.

My recommendation to you, or to anyone else, is to use his method instead. I did recently; it's painlessly easy. With HIS method available, why would anyone even WANT to do it the way I had to, only a few months ago???

cool, i assume you mean the method found in the "PMID701i (Full Root)" thread... do we know that it works for the 701c too? and, how do I go about using the script? I might need step by step instructions more than what is in that thread...

Does that method only root the device using Superoneclick, or does it also add google play to the device automatically?

Does his method fix the phone cell standby issue? (and if not, see my question re: reset, in my original post)

Once you're rooted, yes, it SHOULD work on the 701c, and probably for a number of OTHER tablets, also, as the script only provides and copies the files and changes the 'build.prop' file to a tablet fully supported by Play Store.

To use it, you dissolve the .rar and run the script on your PC. However, you must FULLY ROOT FIRST.

As the posts say, the 701c is already partially rooted out of the box. This avoided the need to have Finless create a ROM for it to give us full root.

                          Again,

Download the FULL (PAID) version of Root Explorer & install on the tablet. A Google search will find it. BTW, the FREE version won't allow R/W access.

The FULL version will allow you the change the /
(root) directory, and all directories under it, to R/W access. This is done by displaying the root directory and clicking on the 'Make R/W' radio button. At a minimum, you'll HAVE to change the /system directory to R/W access, as this is what makes the 701c less than fully rooted.

I didn't have to use SuperOneClick, because the 702c was alreadyfully rooted out of the package. However, you MIGHT could use IT, instead of Root Explorer, to root your tablet instead. (Not sure about THAT, or HOW it's done that way on a 701c.)

Don't KNOW *THAT* for sure, but I don't think so. However, once you're rooted, you can go into the /system/app directory with Root Explorer, and rename Phone.apk to 'Phone.old' (or something like that), and press the 'reset' button on your tablet afterward, as it will go into a 'force close' loop once you do this.

Sorry, but time restraints bar me from going back and researching your original question. Fill me in again, via PM. However, I DID research your CURRENT question. Post or PM me about any further questions you may have, and we'll do our best to answer them.

In a nutshell, for you, it all begins with a full version of Root Explorer. Get and install THAT. If you can't find it, PM me and let me know.

To close, if you need to, PM me with a way to contact you by IM, and, if you like, we'll set up a time for me to walk you through it. Now that I have a job that requires overtime from me, I don't have the time I once did...

                            Hooray!

As it happens, the tablet they sent me was the 701i. oh well.
it's now fully rooted with both amazon app store and google play store available. w00t. thanks everyone for your help. it also seems like liquidlimez's method did fix the phone standby issue.

Now my only question is, if I don't have a data plan and no roaming wifi access, is GPS going to work with an app like google maps etc.? such that i could use a gps without the data plan... i know google maps recently announced they'd be going offline-too sometime soon, but I'm interested to know if there's free gps tracking on the device.

                              Hello!

UIAM, In the case of the 701i, no, as the 701i does not have a GPS built into it.

As a result, any location services would have to be done through WiFi, and I'm unsure how Google can even do THAT unless someone tells them the GPS coordinates of the router's location.

IP addresses are, at best, an unreliable way of pinpointing location, in and out of themselves. My IP address always comes up as my being in some other state than the one I am currently located in...

I see! unfortunate. I guess I will have to wait until the google maps offline update happens.

The only thing that is left concerning me is that "mattery usage stats are unavailable" on my device
