MK 908-II in the house! WOW something has changed for the better!

I am currently looking to buy an android TV stick. Is MK908 the best choice? Is the WiFi so poor that you would recommend splashing the extra cash for a 908ii?

the stutter you see in that map scene is not stutter is a pan and scan in the encode its self so long as its not dropping frames or dropping audio its fine

1080 kernel

FYI, the latest ROM from Tronsmart for the MK908ii has a real 1080 kernel in it!
All they did was edit build.prop to make the icons look smaller etc.

Now I have to figure out how to patch backwards and make a 720 kernel as I think this will perform better for those that do not really care about true 1080 and just want best performance with right now in my opinion a 720 kernel does!

My ROM maybe ready today.

At this time based on testing and the video skip fix, I am going to prefer to use stock kernels for now.

There is FOR SURE something different here and it may have come from RockChip!

There are SECRETS in this stock ROM!

The build.prop still has LCD density at 160 yet..... it is a 1080 kernel!
It is reported by Antutu as a 720 resolution! Why? hahahahaha! I now know why!

Framework-res.apk has images all created to support 160 LCD density BUT at 1080. Antutu triggers on this as well as other apps! This is a tweak I have never seen before.

Lewy, be careful porting minix stuff here. Kernel is stable stock but certainly NOT with this new framework, etc. This is a different thing for sure!

I am telling you guys right now, there is some interesting stuff here and I am sure this came from RockChip!

How they got a Antutu benchmark of 18K at 1080P is a cheat!

I got a lot of work to do boys and girls. This is a new animal for sure. Give me some time.

Learned something new

OK guys let me explain.

In the past if I made a 1080 kernel..... to make the icons, text, etc look like a 720 kernel we always edited this in build.prop:

This supported 720 kernels:
ro.sf.lcd_density=160

This supported 1080 kernels:
If you used a 1080 kernel and wanted the same sized icons and text you edited build.prop lcd density:
ro.sf.lcd_density=240


So it seems we have another build.prop directive!
The MK908-ii did not edit LCD density with a 1080 kernel! And this spoofed many apps to not know we are running 1080p including ANTUTU tests!!!!

video.use.overlay=1
This makes the icons, text etc seem like 720p! It even spoofs Antutu into thinking it's running at that resolution and thus very high Antutu scores! It's a lie! But how?

If you set to this:
video.use.overlay=0
and leave LCD Density at 160 (small icons, text etc) then Antutu is much lower scores!


Now the question is...... what the hell does this mean in the end?
A 1080 kernel that is not drawing as many pixels? I don't know but much more testing to find out!

I cannot find much on google or anywhere else about what the hell video.use.overlay does!
But for sure it has interesting changes to how the Android OS performs!

Keys to the kingdom!

I think I found the keys to the kingdom BUT ONLY with a latest kernel.

This build.prop directive has a HUGE change in video performance!

New ROMS is set to
sys.hwc.compose_policy=6

MK908ii this is set to 0.

HOLY COW! Does this change video performance!

Now these I do not believe are standard Android directives but in fact RockChip directives!

I have MUCH MUCH testing to do as I am sure these directives change how Mali works with HW decoding and the kernel itself!

This is getting FUN now!

Wow.... for sure there is a kernel change here in the MK908ii

If you try older kernels from our Dev's here or CX-919, and you don't set these to directives in build.prop right, shit will be all F'ed up! and I mean seriously bad with garbage video playback!

Now on older kernels, changing some of these values has NO EFECT! This is why I am sure there is a kernel change and I think this IS from RockChip!

I am starting to think we might be seeing a SDK2 morph here. Unfortunately the combinations of all this and different kernels are tweaking my brain right now! Too many combinations!

BUT I am giving you guys some hints on what to play with!

I could use some help testing this stuff and combinations!
